Bluewater looking to share chief building official
The municipality of Bluewater is
looking to share a building
department with several other Huron
County municipalities including
North Huron.
Clerk-administrator John Stewart
said North Huron has been invited to
get information about the proposed
changes but, “it is not something we
are pursuing.”
The possible changes would be
one chief building official for the
municipalities who enter into an
agreement and a number of
inspectors working in each
area.
“The idea is, with one person, if
they were on holidays or if they were
sick or tied up somewhere then we
wouldn’t have anyone to cover,”
Stewart said.
“This would give us some
additional coverage so we could
draw from the inspectors in other
municipalities.”
The clerks in several
municipalities were expected to
meet on Tuesday, Nov. 29 to discuss
costs and which municipalities could
be a part of it. Stewart said he
couldn’t guess at this point how
much the changes would cost if
North Huron decided to enter into an
agreement.
“We’re just getting information
right now,” Stewart said.
An informal round table
discussion about the idea of a joined
building department was held three
weeks ago where it was decided to
let the clerks meet to discuss the
matter further.
The municipalities proposed
for the creation of a joint
building department along
with Bluewater are South
Huron, Central Huron, Goderich,
Lucan-Bidulph and North Huron.
However, Stewart said the
municipalities to join are not
‘determined yet including North
Huron.
Give gift of education this Christmas
It’s an annual dilemma for many
Canadian grandparents: what should
you give your grandchildren for
Christmas?
For many, the answer turns out to
be “whatever my son or daughter
tells me to buy that’s somewhere
near the bottom of their list.” But
buying yet another toy, or more
clothes - which come with a limited
useful lifespan - is often not the
most satisfying answer for
grandparents Who want to provide a
more meaningful contribution to
their grandchildren.
So here’s an idea ... who about
starting a Registered Education
Savings Plan - or RESP - for your
grandchildren, and give it to them
for Christmas? Or, if your family
already has one, make a contribution
to it.
For hundreds of thousands of
Canadians over the last forty years
or so. RESPs have provided the
means for them to attend college or
university. Today, post-secondary
education at a Canadian university
can cost upwards of $15,000 - that’s
tuition fees plus residence and living
expenses.
For children bom today, estimates
suggest that, when they are ready to
go to university, a four-year program
may cost over $120,000.

OPP cruiser
On Nov. 24 at approximately 4:30
p.m. Huron OPP were responding to
a three-vehicle collision on
Lucknow Line in Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh Twp. The
vehicle had been travelling on a
closed road as a result of the
dangerous conditions.
The officer assisted in removing a
driver with minor injuries, who was
transported by ambulance to
Wingham hospital. The officer that
was attempting to get the drivers of
the vehicles to a place of safety.
They encountered severe whiteout
conditions and the cruiser entered
the ditch. Hampered by the weather
conditions and poor visibility both
the cruiser and other vehicles
involved were left at the scene.
Officers returned at the first safe
opportunity to retrieve the vehicles
and found someone had tvandalized
the windows and lights causing
severe damage to the police vehicle.

family has - or will have - the
ability to pay for post-secondary
education, a so-called group RESP
just makes good sqnse. The money
you put into it grows steadily in
conservative, secure investments.
You pay no taxes on income earned
in the plan until it is withdrawn -
and if it is withdrawn by your
grandchild while in university or
college it is taxed in their hands.
And the Government of Canada will
con:ribute additional funds to make
the investment grow even higher.
Here’s how a group RESP
works...
Once you establish your plan,
through an RESP dealer, you can
contribute a small amount per
month, or up to $4,000 per year, to a
maximum of $42,000 over the full
life of the plan. Your money is put
into a “pool” with other
contributors, to maximize the
potential return. In addition, the
government will provide a Canada
Education Savings Grant (CESG) of
up to $500 per year, per child, or up
to $7,200 in government funds over
the life of the plan.
When your grandchild is ready to
go from high school, your RESP
contributions are returned tax-free,
to be used toward the education
expenses. Your grandchild then
receives the interest from the plan as
Education Assistance Payments, and
even though tax is then payable, it’s
at your grandchild’s tax rate, which
will usually be minimal at that stage
of his or her life.
There are many other details
you’ll want to know and questions to
ask. To get started, visit the RESP
Dealers Association of Canada
website - www.respdac.ca - and
link onto the sites of any of the four
member companies. Then, when
you’re ready, call the one you feel
most comfortable with.
Giving an RESP - or making a
contribution to one that’s already in
place - may not generate screams of
delight under the Christmas tree this
year. But long after the video game
or wind-up doll are broken, or the
pair of gloves wear out - your gift of
education will create a meaningful
legacy that will last a lifetime.
