Hear Dickens’ ‘Carol’ at Anglican Church
As part of the preparations for the
Christmas season, CBC Radio and
Trinity Anglican Church, Blyth
present a reading of Charles
Dickens' A Christmas Carol on
Tuesday. Dec. 13. The evening will
begin with a chicken supper in the
Church hall at 5 p.m.. followed by
the reading at 7 p.m. in the church
proper.
Trinity Anglican Church is located
at the corner of Dinsley Street and
Gypsy Lane, Blyth.
In December of 1989, Judy
Maddren a broadcaster with CBC
At the Branch
9 Comrades at meeting
Radio and her family had the
opportunity to read the complete
Christmas Carol. She realized that
once people grow up, they usually
leave behind the pleasure of being
read to, and with that thought, this
one...Wouldn’t it be wonderful to
read A Christmas Carol to adults.
A few years after writing the
original story, Dickens shortened it
so he could present it as an evening’s
entertainment. With the briefer text
in hand, and the support of her
colleagues at CBC radio, Maddren
set about mounting a public reading
with music.
Maddren organized the First public
reading in December 1990 to benefit
a local women’s shelter. From that
one successful night the event has
grown dramatically and now is
presented by CBC Radio, in
conjunction with local partners, in
over 110 communities across
Canada (as well as readings in the
United States) for the benefit of local
charities similar in nature to those
Charles Dickens himself promoted:
children, literacy, less fortunate
families, education for all, and
health care.
The pleasure of a good story heard
for the first time (or the sixth time!),
the joy of music of the Christmas
Season, and the inspired energy of
people who want to make our
communities a better place, all come
together in this presentation of A
Christmas Carol.
Most lead fortunate lives, and this
event helps to remind of that. CBC
Radio and Trinity invite all those
who are interested in the local
community to come and enjoy this
festive evening.
MC at Trinity on Dec. 13 is Wes
McVicar of Goderich who will
introduce the special readers: Mary
Weins, reporter and specials
producer for CBC Radio; The Rev.
Robin McGauley, Blyth United
Church; Tom Dunbar, River Line
Nature Company, Goderich, owner;
Shari Cartwright, lay reader. Trinity
Anglican Church; Duncan
McGregor, F.E. Madill teacher,
playwright and director.
The audience will be invited to
join community singers in favourite
carols of the season.
Proceeds from this event will go to
benefit the Blyth Community Youth
Park and other projects supporting
youth in Blyth and area.
Advance Tickets are $ 15 for adults
including dinner and the reading, or
$5 at the door for the reading
alone.

The Brussels Legion general
meeting was held on Tuesday
evening with nine comrades in
attendance.
The business of the Branch and
the upcoming events were
discussed.
A New Year’s Eve dance is being
planned. Tickets will be $5 each.
There will be a potluck meal and a
theme to be announced.
Thursday night darts earned on
even through the storm with eight
players attending. They played
singles with John Harrison being top
player.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by a good-sized
turnout, even with the bad weather.
This week is roast beef.
The Santa Claus parade was really
great and lots of folks watched from
in front of the Legion. Many came in
to warm up and take part in the
draws.
Saturday evening was the
wedding reception for Mark and
Cathy Pennington who were married
Friday evening in St. John’s
Anglican Church. A lively, festively-
decorated hall greeted the guests.
Congrats to Mark and Cathy.
The Hamiltons celebrated
Christmas at the Branch on Sunday
afternoon. Family members
gathered and enjoyed the afternoon
and a family meal together.
Membership as of Dec. 1 is $45.
So for those who haven’t been in,
it’s time to do so.
Team darts are this weekend. If
interested call John Harrison.
Comrade Allyson Cardiff reported
that a very successful poppy
campaign was conducted and
extended thanks to all who helped.
It is with sadness that the Branch
has learned of the passing of 60-year
member Archie Henderson.
Arrangements were incomplete at
press time so members will be
notified of arrangements.
