NH to investigate legalities ofACO’s By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor North Huron council is going to look into the legalities of allowing the animal control officer to put down any dog that’s a threat. Bob Trick asked council’s permission at the Nov. 21 meeting saying, “it’s not my intention to get chewed up. And 1 would like permission to put down a dog in case I run into a serious situation.” The animal control officer underlined the fact that this wouldn’t mean he’d act irresponsibly. “Over 16 years I’ve only put down six dogs. But it was brought to my attention this year that dogs can be quite vicious and I want to protect myself.” Clerk-administrator John Stewart explained to council that currently the contract does allow Trick to discharge a firearm. Reeve Doug Layton then wondered if that didn’t mean Trick had permission to shoot any dog that he felt threatened by. The animal control officer stated, however, that this was usually for the purpose of wild animals or for humane reasons. “It does say I can shoot a dog with the reeve’s permission, but if I have to hunt up the reeve in a serious request situation it may be too late.” Questioned by councillor Murray Nesbitt as to whether or not council could legally give him the authority, the matter was turned over to the health, social and cultural committee for consideration. The legal implications will also be investigated. North Huron council learns township has pythons By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor There may be as many as eight pythons in North Huron. That was the news from animal control officer Bob Trick when he delivered his annual report to council at the Nov. 21 meeting. Trick told council that there was one python in the township, but he had learned “there may be seven more”. As well there are 10 pit bulls in the township, eight have complied with the registration and one “almost” said Trick. A total of 557 tags were sold, which is down about 55 from last year. Thirteen dogs were picked up and taken to the vet, and another two were returned to their owners with a warning. There were three sick cats dealt with and one vicious dog. Trick handled attacks on people by three dogs, while two dogs had attacked other dogs. There was also a case of a horse being attacked by dogs. There were reports of 10 skunks. Trick sent one away for testing which came back positive for rabies. “So I presume they all had rabies,” Trick added. One kennel licence was sold. And as bylaw enforcement officer, Trick said he spoke to six skateboarders in Blyth, where boarders are not permitted on the street. North Huron council briefs Clerk says campground issue seems to be resolved North Huron clerk-admnisitrator John Stewart told council at the Nov. 21 that everything seems to be in place for the Bluewater Kennel Club dog show and Campvention this summer. An overlap in use of the Blyth campgrounds had created a conflict, which with co-operation on both sides, said Stewart, appears to have been resolved. *** It was a difficult decision but council finally agreed to treat the staff to the Christmas dinner and dance at the Wingham Columbus Centre, Dec. 3. At the Nov. 7 meeting council lor Murray Nesbitt stated his feeling that council needed to do something more significant than in the past to show staff they areappreciated. The idea of the dinner and dance concerned some councillors as they felt' it would leave out employees who chose not to attend. The matter was deferred to Nov. 21 for a decision. That night Adams stated that paying for the dinner and dance would cost approximately double to what was normally spent. Nesbitt, however, stressed that this was not the time of year to pinch pennies, adding that council does not do enough for its employees. It was also decided that those not attending would receive something in lieu of the dinner. *** From the public works committee a recommendation was accepted to purchase a heavy duty rotary brush -------------------------------- Three million Canadians have a hearing loss.
