Service to others, theme of Londesborough UCW
The devotional time at the
Londesborough UCW meeting on
Monday evening, Nov. 21 was led
by Yvonne Hoggart, Marie Bromley,
Harriett Shillinglaw and Helen Lee.
Service to others who need our help
was the theme.
The hymn When I Needed a
Neighbour, asks the questions,
“Where you there?” The reading of
the parable of the Good Samaritan
asks the question, “Which one was
the neighbour?”
Guest speaker that evening was
Barbara (Lee) Mustard of Stratford.
Barbara is a registered nurse who
over the years has taken many extra
courses because of her growing
interest in mental health. Currently,
she works for the Huron Perth
Hospital alliance in that field.
Barbara is part of the team
working on the in-patient or locked
psychiatric ward in Stratford
General Hospital, does cases for the
outpatient centre at that hospital and
the Listowel Hospital, and is
involved with cases from the 24-
hour crisis line operating in
Stratford, Clinton and Listowel. She
explained that depression can range
from mild anxiety, which
occasionally all of us can feel, to the
need to be in a monitored situation.
Some folk need to be taught
coping skills as every day is a
struggle. Mental illness can run in
families unfortunately, whereas
some is due to environmental factors
and/or substance abuse.
Persons working in this field are
always developing new ideas to ease
the pain for their patients. Barb
explained that there are many myths
and stigmas associated with this
disease and gave handouts for the
ladies to study.
The crisis line is funded by the
hospitals and uses trained
professionals in an attempt to
intervene early to prevent suicides.
Although it is no longer a shame to
have mental disease, it remains an
issue people still have difficulty

all of them through the rough days.
Oops! In last week’s paper I
erroneously encouraged all of you
to enjoy breakfast with the
Londesborough Lions on Sunday,
Nov. 27. Having noticed a poster on
the board at the local post office for
a country breakfast, I misread the
location. There was a breakfast in
Blyth last Sunday, but not in
Londesborough.

talking about.
Barbara has a Korean daughter-in-
law whom she recently accompanied
on a visit to Sophia’s homeland.
Barbara quickly realized that this
country still maintains a very
traditional culture. Women are
subservient and must produce a male
heir, homosexuality is not
recognized and women don’t smoke.
The mentally ill are not talked about
and those care facilities have terrible
conditions.
This small country has a dense
population, continues to resist
communism and has a large
underground economy. Barbara feels
the country is about two generations
behind the western world in cultural
issues.
The women in attendance enjoyed
having one of their own back to
speak to them and would have kept
her talking the whole evening. They
are went having learned much about
the mental health field and the
Korean culture. The Korean items
Barbara brought along were of much
interest to all.
As this was the last gathering for
the UCW of a business nature before
the new year, many details were
finalized, new work sheets were
distributed, and the Christmas
potluck meeting was discussed.
