Assists were earned by Marks, McPherson, Cory MacDonald with Ironmen overpower By Andrew Smith Wingham Advance Times An 8-0 blowout is usually the result of a very good team, or a very bad team. In the case of the Mount Forest Patriots and the Wingham Ironmen, it’s a combination. It didn’t take long to see where the game was going, as Cole Stewart took his first goal of the night just 19 seconds in, showing little concern over goalie Brady Lantz. Andy Cline came close on & back hand shot that went wide of the net, but Stewart finished the job up by scoring on the powerplay for a quick 2-0 lead. Wingham was looking to find a flow to their game after that, as holes in their defence and missed passes let up some chances to the Patriots. Coming out of the lull for the last five minutes of the period, Blyth dominates second period Continued from page 10 period. Blyth continued to dominate through the second with two more goals, while shutting down the Mildmay team. Wightman, handed off to Curtis Raynard who set up the play for Brendan Hallahan to score. Pennington then skated in unassisted to bring the score to 3-0 going into the final period. Mildmay finally found the way by Carey after the break, but Pennington skated in alone a half minute later to widen the gap again. With five minutes remaining in play, Mildmay came within two, but it was short-lived. Sixty-two seconds later, Wightman handed off to Hallahan to score. Then as the clock ticked down. If Wingham wanted to advance they had to defeat Howick and earn all 10 points as the tournament was on a point system. The system Wingham headed to the Mount Forest net to add some shots. A bouncing pass from Stewart in front of the net gave Justin Russell a chance to practise his swing, batting the puck in for Wingham’s third goal. Wingham goalie Jeff Baker was left counting the threads in the net as Billy McGrail took Wingham’s lead to 4-0, earning as many Mount Forest had shots. Looking a bit stronger, opened the second period few more shots, but Baker held on to the shutout with some quick saves. Wingham worked to keep the dominant possession of the puck even on the penalty kill, organizing some shorthanded chances. Stewart continued to show why he’s the league’s leading scorer, earning the hattrick on a simple looking breakaway. goals as the Pats to add a bulged the twine to give Blyth a 6-2 victory. Ashley Higgins assisted. It was a different story when the Novices played game three against Milverton. The first period saw a goal each scored, with Milverton striking for first blood. Raynard, with an assist from Connor Rodger lit the light for Blyth. Things looked good for the squad after the break as they held the Milverton team to one goal, while Pennington bulged the twine to put Blyth ahead. Dustin Treble was creditted with the assist. The wheels fell off in the third period, however, as the team was unable to get past the Milverton netminder, while the opposition’s offence came up with two to take consisted of two points for winning each period and four points for getting the win. Wingham went out in game three and got the 10 points they required defeating Howick 5-2. Goal scorers were C. MacDonald with two, Ryan Shaw, Kirk Stewart and Greg Tiffin. Assists were earned by Stewart (two), Kris MacDonald, A. MacDonald and Paul Garniss. Wingham would have to wait for the results of the final game between Howick and Drayton to see who Patriots Two more goals by Ryan Fry and Matt Hill gave Baker a nice rest back in the Wingham end. As the Pats picked up one last penalty, the Ironmen were scrambling but couldn’t find the shot as the period ended. What the third period lacked in scoring, it more than made up for in penalties. “New sensation’’ Joel Riley picked up the single goal halfway through the period, while Matt MacPhee and Mark Robertson took the lion’s share of the penalties with a brawl behind the Mount Forest net. “We took a couple uncharacteristic penalties,” said coach Louie Livingston. “You get bad habits from doing that.” It was as simple as waiting out the clock for Wingham to take the 8-0 win, tossing Baker the shutout. Continued on page 12 this one by a score of 3-2. Blyth moved on to the A final and a rematch against the tough Milverton team.
