(Photo submitted) Rock Talk - By Bill Johnston The Blyth Kings broomball team travelled to Mildmay on Nov. 26 to play the Jets. Both Bantam teams hit the ice in top form and played a very strong and evenly-matched first period. Each team had scoring opportunities, but only Mildmay could get the ball in the net, scoring against Blyth with just one minute left in the first period. Mildmay had a lucky break in the second period when their player scored a goal after chipping the ball into the top comer of the net. In the last 49 seconds of the game there was lots of action in front of the net. The Kings’ goalie, Derek Logtenberg, stopped the first two shots on the Blyth net, but couldn't stop the third shot when he was caught too far ahead of the net, allowing the ball to roll over the goal line. The Kings played a very good game, even though the score was a 3- 0 win for Mildmay. Coach Jennifer Miltenberg named Jordon Rinn and Brent Drost as co winners of the Man of the Match title. These two Blyth centre forwards received this game's title for doing a good job in making the shift changes and playing their positions. Tykes lose The Blyth Tyke I team travelled to Zurich for a Saturday afternoon game. In the first part of the game Blyth tried to get their game faces on. Finally Justin Rodger scored, assisted by Drew Bromley. / Zurich had its fair share of scoring, but Blyth came back with another goal scored by Rodger, unassisted. The third and final goal was scored by Hunter Dale, unassisted. Blyth took another loss. Netminder for this matchup was Chad Treble, who made some great stops. Blowing snow and blocked roads wiped out all action all action in the three Thursday leagues at the Wingham Curling Club last week. *** In the Monday daytime league “Gone Hunting” Bill Deans came up with a great spare in Keith Wemick Elston and his team recorded a 7-4 victory over Irving Elliott. On ice two Lloyd Wheeler came up with a big six end in the fourth but the Mac Inglis crew kept clawing back. Down by one coming home without the hammer they stole three for a 9- 7 victory. Stewart Leedham kept his winning ways as he downed Don Henry 9-3 for his perfect record of five wins for five games. In other action: Ivan Dow 10 - Ron McMichael 7; Wendell Stamper 11 - Nelson Frank 7; Alex Nethery 14 - Jim Coultes 4; and despite winning on the ice Les Shaw lost by default to Bruce Robertson due to lack of team members. *** In Tuesday ladies’ league Kayla Bishop downed Mary Henry. Other results were: Joyce Vincent 5 - Leanne Elston 2; Debbie Gammie 6 - Jennie Hogervorst 4. *** There were six teams in action on Monday night with some rather one sided scores as Stewart Leedham defeated Ken Wood 11-2; Wayne Horton 13 - Barry Simpson 4 and John Mann 11 - Johp Nixon 3. *** The Tuesday night competitive league saw some real battles to the button. Results as follows: Art DeVos 6 - Middleton 5; Calvin Ruttan 8 - Shawn Cottrill 4; Bill De Vos 8 - Don Edgar 7; and Earl Fitch 10 - Russ Taylor 4. *** In the Friday night mixed league six teams hit the ice with results as follows: Shawn Cottrill 7 - Wayne Waechter 3; Chris Cottrill 9 - Rod Wraith 3; and Hugh Glugston 6 - Lynn Hickey 4. *** On Friday, Nov. 25 at the North Huron Wescast Complex the founding members of the Wingham Golf Club, R.H. “Dick” Lloyd, Wilfred French and Harley Crawford were added to the Sports Wall of Fame as builders. *** Congratulations to the junior curlers who competed in Zone Playdowns in Kincardine on Saturday, Nov. 19. The girls led by skip Leanne Elston came out on top and qualified to advance to the next playdowns which took place in Ripley on Nov. 25 and 26. The boys played well but lost out in the consolation finals in a close one. At Ripley on the weekend in the ladies’ junior regional playdown the Elston rink consisting of sister Emily, Britney Horton, and Kayla Bishop won the B side to advance to the provincial finals to be held in Scarborough Jan. 4 - 8. The winner of the A side was Britanny O’Neil of Burlington. Think girls coach Keith Elston was just a mite more excited than the happy successful girls. The Rollers struggled in this game as they just couldn’t get around Palmerston’s strong defensive line to score. Palmerston players were good at chipping the ball up and over Blyth players. Jonathan Hakkers tended the Blyth net for the first half of the game. He stopped several shots taken against him. However, Palmerston was able to take a 4-0 lead at halftime. Blyth’s Emily Uyl covered the net in the second period. She made several great saves. Palmerston was able to get two more goals during Girls begin playdowns The Saugeen Maitland AA Midget girls hockey team played the first game of playdowns to see who will represent the Western Area of the North Metro Girls Hockey League in the Ontario Winter Games to be held next March in Barrie. The game was held in Milverton on Nov. 21 against the Stratford Aces. The first goal of the game was scored by Stacey Scholten on a pass from Michelle Kittel. Stratford tied the game and the score remained a tie until the last five minutes when Tara O’Reilly put one past the Continued on page 10 the second period. The first goal was scored after Uyl made the first save, but Palmerston took a second shot and tucked the ball into the right corner of Blyth’s net. The second goal occurred when there was too much traffic in front of the net and Uyl couldn’t get her eye on the ball. The final score was 6-0 for Palmerston. After the second period was over the teams practised 10 minutes of overtime. In overtime the goalkeepers are pulled and the teams play four against four players. This was a great way for these young players to learn the rules of overtime. * ''hV Extended Christmas Hours Thurs. 8 am ■ Sat. 8 am - 5 pm Starting in December Arrived!
