The Brussels Bulls and the Grand
Valley Twisters were matched up in
the Silver Stick Midget C division
final. Both teams were undefeated
for the weekend, making for a tough
finale.
The first period went by with both
teams scoreless, and just two
minutes in the box each. The shots
were coming hard, with a Grand
Valley chance ringing off the
crossbar. The penalties increased as
the tension between the teams got a
little higher, looking for that
important first goal.
A Twister’s break was kept out by
Brussels goalie Kyle Gibson, but
with 39.5 seconds left in the period,
the crowd outnumbered him and he
was beat on a top shelf shot to the
net.
Coach Jim McDonald said the
boys were given a word or two
between periods, but only a third of
it was printable.

“The boys knew what had to be
done,” McDonald said. “We just
weren’t playing team hockey.”
Starting the third on a powerplay,
Brussels snapped out of the coma to
have Wade Stephenson score the
tying goal. Coming back on another
powerplay, the Bulls showed a
complete turn-around, as Adam
McClure put his team ahead 2-1.
A flurry of penalties followed, but
neither team could organize an
attack to take advantage.
With Adam and Chris Corbett
adding to the scoresheet for the
previous games, Grand Valley had
them under tight cover, meaning the
rest of the team had to fill the void.
“They took them out of the game,
so the other boys stepped up and did
their part,” McDonald said.
The game was in full control by
Brussels with five minutes left, as
Steven Ropp sealed the win over
Grand Valley with one last goal.
Feeling beaten, the Twisters were
left with little to do except pack up
and head back to the dressing room.

time against Drayton. The squad played to victory on home
ice Friday night. (Heather Crawford photo)
This past Friday the Brussels
Novices hosted Drayton.
With one league play loss and an
exhibition loss to Drayton already
this season the players had their
work cut out for them.
Drayton struck first midway
through the first, they increased their
lead in the second.
Brussels Tim Waechter responded
midway through the period on a nice
solo effort to cut the lead to 2-1.
A short time later Drayton took*it
to take a two-point lead.
Brussels stretch early in the third
when Waechter swatted in a
Wyatt Ducharme rebound. Lexi
Smith pulled Brussels even
after stripping the puck off a
Drayton defender. Seven seconds
later Kai Hiemstra broke in off
the faceoff and put Brussels ahead 4-
3.
With 10 minutes left in the game
Drayton blitzed Brussels goalie Matt
McNichol who stood tall but had no
chance on Drayton’s equalizer.
With time winding down
Ducharme broke through the
Drayton defence to put the game
away with 19.2 seconds left. Scott
Dolmage and Hiemstra assisted.
Brussels improved the regular
season record to 6-1.
Brussels next edition is this Friday
at home against Zurich at 6:30 p.m.
before a Saturday morning game in
Monkton.
