The Blyth Festival Singers prepare to present seasonal music in a concert with the Festival
Orchestra and special guest Dec. 5. (Photo submitted)
The Blyth Festival Singers will
celebrate their 25th year at A Huron
County Christmas, a concert geared
to put the whole family in the
holiday spirit on Sunday, Dec. 4 at
2:30 p.m. in Blyth Memorial Hall.
The Blyth Festival Singers, the
Blyth Festival Orchestra, and
members of the Blyth Festival acting
company have joined forces to
create a concert featuring seasonal
Canadian music and readings.
Robert Blackwell, director of the
Blyth Festival Singers has selected a
programme of Canadian choral
favourites for the 50-voice choir to
perform - traditional and
contemporary songs from the
beloved Huron Carol, to
compositions by Healey Willan and
modem interpretations of classics
like I Saw Three Ships.
The joyous sounds of Ring the
Bells in Jubilee! will show the
talents of young Canadian
composers like James Wright, as
will the beautiful A Song to the
Child, based on a Korean folk song
with words by Willagene Hatch of
London, Ontario.
Special guest soloist David
Keeley will also contribute to the
concert. A veteran of musical
theatre across the country, Keeley is
best known for starring in Mamma
Mia on Broadway for over a year.
He is also one half of Two Houses, a
country/rock duo that he formed
with his song-writing partner, Paul
Gross, the actor of Due South fame.
With his rugged good looks and
heavenly voice, Keeley is sure to
provide some extra power to the
concert. The Blyth Festival Singers’
accompanist is Sharon Johnston of
Goderich.
The Blyth Festival Orchestra has
commissioned a new work that will
be premiered in partnership with the
Singers. Three Songs of Mary, was
composed by J. Scott Brubacher.
This is the first time the orchestra
has commissioned a piece of music
and continues a tradition of the
orchestra working together will the
Blyth Festival Singers, as the music
features three soloist parts.

Sir PARK THEATRE
Country singer conies to Blyth
Country super-star Michelle
Wright will be bringing a Nashville
Christmas to Blyth Dec. 19 at
Memorial Hall.
The Chatham area native has a
new Christmas album out in stores
called A Wright Christmas.
She didn’t expect, which
recording in July, -that getting into
the Christmas spirit would be easy.“I
was worried about it at first but
when that music starts to play...it
was the best experience I’ve had
making an album,” she said, from
her home in Nashville.
Wright, whose career has spanned
two decades with 25 hit songs in
Canada including Take it Like a
Man, had never recorded a
Christmas album before.
“I was baptized a few years ago as
a Christian and I know that
Christmas doesn’t necessarily have
to represent the birth of Christ. But I
didn’t want to be on stage singing it
until 1 truly believed it,” she said.
She will take her show on tour
across Southern Ontario starting
Dec. 16 in Lindsay.
"We try to put on a rockin’ show
for everyone,” she said. “There’s
going to be singing and clapping and
dancing. It’s a top notch show and
very Christmasy.”
Wright said she chose the songs
for the album and the show with joy.
“I went through a bunch of
Christmas songs. There is one
original written by my good friend
Patricia Conroy. We play all of the
songs from the album [at the show]
and then there are some hits as
well.”
For Wright, Christmas is about
keeping close what’s important in
her life.
“We didn’t have a lot of money
growing up because my mother was
a single parent so she used to work
hard to make Christmas special for
us,” she remembered. “Being
around family and friends, that’s
what it is for me.”
