Co-op placement a learning experience for students
By Devon Joshng
I am a Grade 12, co-op student at
F.E. Madill Secondary School. I am
taking a two-credit co-op placement
at CKNX in Wingham. My co-op
teacher is Mrs. Kellington and my
supervisor at CKNX is Scott
Pettigrew.
So far I’ve had a lot of fun at
CKNX and 1 have met a lot of
interesting people. My co-workers
include Jay, Russ, Mike, Andrew,
Susan, Dave, Phil, Joey and a lot
more. My co-workers are fun to be
around. I am learning a lot from their
experience and knowledge of the
radio industry.
1 never knew a radio station could
be such a busy place but ever since
the first day 1 started there everyone
has always been on the fly. Some of
the tasks that I have performed
include sorting the CDs in the CD
library and setting intro-times to
songs for FM 102 and AM 920.
I’ve also sat in during a live
broadcast with Bull a few times
which were very memorable
learning experiences.
But my favourite task that I’ve
helped with so far is helping 94.5
with The Gods Of Rock weekend,
which is when I looked up 300 e-
mails for the best guitarists,
drummers, vocalist and bassists.
Lately, I’ve started getting ready
for Christmas by setting the intros,
volumes, etc. for Christmas songs
for FM 102 and AM 920 to use when
December rolls along.

My name is Justin Wesselink. I am
in a two-credit co-op class.
My co-op placement is at John
Cullen Chevrolet located on main
street in Wingham. My supervisors
are Jim LeFeuvre and Fay Weber. 1
am there in the mornings for about a
month and then in the afternoon for
about a month and it alternates
because of my timetable this year.
My time there is usually spent by
helping out the other mechanics with
tire rotations, oil changes, and brake
inspections. When I am not helping
Pete, Scott and Phil and I am usually
washing cars, sweeping out the shop,
or taking out the trash, which is not
as bad as it sounds.
I am taking co-op this year
because I am thinking about
becoming a mechanic, and I wanted
to make sure this was the career for
me before I went any further. So far
it looks promising.

I am currently enrolled in a two-
credit co-op course at F.E. Madill
Secondary School in Wingham. Any
student in Grades 11, 12 or their fifth
year can participate in either a two-
credit or four-credit co-op through
their school. My two-credit co-op
course is currently being taken at
Wingham Public School in the
Grade 5 classroom. I have one main
supervisor, Miss Crystal Heenan,
and 23 students.
I am finding co-op to be a
combination of excitement and
enjoyable work that can, and will,
guide me to a future career I will
enjoy. I am taking co-op because I
want to explore my options and
make an informed decision before
moving to a post-secondary location.
Some people involved in the co-op
program find that once they start at
their co-op placement, that type of
career is not for them.
My experiences at co-op are very
rewarding. 1 am able to work one-
on-one with students, answer
questions, supervise, participate in
activities, but most of all, learn more
about what the teaching profession
involves. I am also discovering new
skills, strengths and interests that I
never knew I had.
So, if you are debating whether or
not to enroll in a co-op program, I
would hope that this article about my
co-op has helped you decide. I
strongly encourage students to try a
co-op program, whether it be two-
credit or four-credit. It is a great
experience to use your strengths and
skills in a profession you think you
would enjoy.

I am a Grade 12 student at F.E.
Madill Secondary School in
Wingham. I am in the two-credit co
op program this semester.
I chose this year to do my co-op
placement at Wingham Public
School. At Wingham Public School I
am in the Grade 1 room with Mrs.
Schedler’s class. They are the best
class ever.
I have many daily duties. For
example I do “word rings” with the
kids. They read the words to me and
then 1 give a star stamp if the word is
right. I also help with math and I put
words in their dictionaries.
I also do anything else that Mrs.
Schedler wants me to do. Mrs.
Schedler’s class is an awesome class
to work in every day for the next
four months.
I think that this is a perfect
experience for me while I am still in
high school. 1 am actually
considering this kind of field after
high school as an educational
assistant. I enjoy seeing their smiling
faces everyday when they are
learning something new. I find
working with the students to be very
rewarding. I hope to be teaching
elementary students someday down
the road.

I attend F.E. Madill Secondary
School in Wingham. For my co-op
placement this year I chose to work
at Evergreen Holsteins, located
north of Brussels on Brandon Road.
It is owned and operated by two
brothers, Bill and Robert van Nes.
At Evergreen Holsteins they milk
400 Holstein cows in a double 20
parallel parlour.
Although it is a dairy operation, I
have never milked there. On the
farm there are so many other tasks
that need to be completed in order to
keep the farm operating. It is truly a
team effort.
I was hired to assist in feeding and
caring for the calves, along with
doing field work.

It has been a rewarding
