Redemption the name of the game for Ironmen
By Andrew Smith
Wingham Advance-Times
Redemption was the name
of the game as the Wingham
Ironmen prepared for another
league showdown with the
Kincardine Bulldogs.
After losing a 5-4 OT
heartbreaker to the Bulldogs
the week before, the Ironmen
were looking to even the
score. Jeff Baker had the start
in net for Wingham, taking a
risky looking shot off the pads
as Kincardine revved up their
offense. Leading scorer Cole
Stewart showed he can not
only find the puck, but he can
throw the hits, laying out
Jordan Lang.
A pass from Billy McGrail
to Ryan Fry opened up a
chance, but goalie Ryan
Maurice had his glove ready.
McGrail was too quick off the
next faceoff though, firing a
shot through to start Wingham

The second period started
2-0 for the Raiders but at

one when a player picked up a
cross-ice pass on the right
side of the crease and went
glove side on Wheeler.

off 1-0. Rookie Andy Cline
stickhandled a chance for
himself in front of the net, but
was shot down by Maurice.
Another faceoff won by
Kincardine in the Ironmen
end had the Bulldogs sniping
a shot through Baker, tying
the game 1-1, and the shot
count 7-7.
Playing some four-on-four
hockey after a couple of
penalties, Dawson Smith
moved the puck up to Justin
Russell, shooting just high of
the net. Working with 30
seconds on the powerplay,
Matt McCann was beat on his
shot, only to have Matt Hill
pick up the rebound for the
powerplay goal.
Opening the second on
another powerplay, captain
Matt MacPhee made the most
of it to score Wingham's third
goal, opening the lead over
Kincardine.
Coach Louie Livingston

Sunday, Nov. 20 against
Tiverton was much more

There was plenty of action
from both teams. The players

periods.
The final score was 0-0.

said the celebration was
premature. “Going up 3-1 on
the powerplay, we thought we
had it won,” Livingston said.
“It was a total team collapse.”
A sketchy call against
Wingham had them on the
kill, leaving a bouncing puck
in front of Baker to get
knocked in on the rebound.
The Ironmen defence looked
like they were taking the shift
off, leaving Kincardine to
shoot and scoring the tying
goal. Three minutes later, a
shaken Baker let in the go-
ahead goal for Kincardine on
an easy shot, as Kurt Edwards
stepped in to bring the game
back.
Livingston had nothing bad
to say about Baker's game
though. “They hung him out
to dry, some of those goals
weren't his fault.”
The Ironmen continued to
play a fraction of their ability,
almost letting Tim Dwinnell
away on a break during the
powerplay, finally getting
brought down by Edwards.
Snapping back, the Ironmen
showed they were still in it, as
Hill and Stewart teamed up
for the 4-4 tying goal.
The last minutes of the
period had some
opportunities for Wingham to
take the lead, but Kincardine's
Lang broke out with five
seconds left, followed by
Smith. As Smith reached for
the puck, Lang was pulled
down, resulting in the ref
calling a penalty shot.
It was down to Edwards and
Lang, as the Kincardine
attacker started in, going to
the right of the net, where
Edwards was ready to tuck it
away in his glove. According
to Livingston, the save woke
the team up.

“By far, the big boost was
that penalty shot Edwards
stopped,” Livingston said.
“That gave us a spark.”
Edwards stonewalled
another Bulldogs’ rush in the
final period, getting lucky on
a few more close calls.
Neither end was prepared to
give up the next goal, but at
8:06, the Bulldogs edged their
way in to score.

picked up his fourth point of

fourth powerplay goal. With
just over five minutes left,
overtime loomed ahead of the
teams in a repeat of the
Wingham loss.
“I was already doing up my

regulation, Blake Alton

“To get three out of four
points, that's important,”
Livingston said. “It gives
them one more loss.”
