It was ladies first as the ladies’ Tuesday league opened the action in Nov. 1. Six teams were in action. They played a quick six-end game. Results Nov. 8 were: Joyce Vincent 8, Debbie Gammie 2; Kayla Bishop 6, Leeann Elston 5; with Mary Henry downing Jen Elston in an extra end. *** The biggest league is the daytime league which curls at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. This is a real fun league with curlers from Blyth, Wroxeter, Gorrie. Bluevale. Lucknow, Belgrave, Teeswater, Belmore and Wingham. Blyth Novices vein big It was a big victory for the Blyth Novice Reps when they hosted Zurich Nov. 19 in league hockey action. Dustin Pennington put the first Blyth goal into the net mid-way through the first period. Ashley Higgins and Mackenzie Nesbitt were creditted with the assists. The second period saw the team widen its lead by three, while Monday action saw final results: Leedham 7, Alex Nethery 5; Les Shaw 10, Irvin Elliott 3; Ron McMichael 9, Wendell Stamper 5; and Mac Inglis defeating Ivan Dow in an extra end shoot out. In afternoon action: Bruce Robertson 12, Jim Coultes 3; Bill Deans 9, Nelson Frank 3; Lloyd Wheeler 10, Don Henry 4. Thursday action results as follows: Inglis 8, Robertson 3; Nethery 13, Wheeler 1; Deans 7, Stamper, 3; Dow 11, Henry 6; Leedham 10, Coultes 7; Elliott 7, Frank 4; and McMichael defeating Shaw in an extra end. Eight teams are in action in the Tuesday night men’s competitive league. Results for Nov. 8: Russ Taylor 9, Rob Middleton 6; Calvin Ruttan 9, Bill Devos 6; Earl Fitch 7, Shawn Cottrill 1; Art Devos 6, Don continuing to shut out their visitors. Wightman and Ashley Higgins combined to set up Josh Van Soest, who sunk the puck for goal number two. Just less than three minutes later, Ryan Plunkett skated in to score with Pennington and Wightman setting up the play. Pennington then turned around to bulge the twine for Blyth with Edgar 2. *** Six teams hit the ice on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Thursday mixed family league. Results for Nov. 17: Elliott Miller 9, Kevin Bishop 5; Doug Miller 7, Shawn Cottrill 6; and on ice number one were the McDonalds with Bill defeating Cole in a real battle to the button 8- 7. *** The 9 p.m. league Thursday is the Belgrave league with keen action for bragging rights. Results for Nov. 17 as follows: Jim Ross 8, Murray McNichol 6; Fred Meier 7, Murray Shiell 2; John Nixon 6, Niel Edgar 3; and Don Shiell 6, Lloyd Michie 4. After three weeks, four teams Don Shiell, Jim Ross, Niel Edgar and Murray Shiell are tied for first with two wins and one loss. Nesbitt and Connor Rodger assisting, Van Soest handed off to Pennington to complete his hattrick with a minute and a half left in the second. The squad failed to add to their tally in the third, but allowed only one goal from their visitors in the dying minutes of the game. The final score was 5-1 for Blyth. Blyth Tykes host Elma Logan The Blyth Tyke Is hosted Elma Logan on Sunday afternoon. The visitors began the scoring just seconds into the game, then continued to light the light several times. In a fight in front of the net, Hunter Dale, finally poked in Blyth’s first goal, assisted by Morgan Howson. Then Justin Rodger skated in unassisted to bring Blyth’s tally to two. Elma Logan was on their game and finished with a 10-2 victory. Playing a good defensive game was Brendan Howson with some dives to get the puck. Making the saves in net was Cody Treble. Coaches, Steve Howson, and fill-in Todd MacDonald credited the players with a great game. It is the 42nd year of curling in Brussels and the enthusiasm is just as great as in the beginning. There are 48 regular curlers and four spares.
