Floral campaign raises $ 1,451 for breast clinic
By Cheryl Heath
Clinton News Record
Four area florists gathered in
Clinton Tuesday afternoon to
present Marianna Porter of the
breast screening clinic in Goderich
with donations totalling $1,451 from
a fundraiser held in October as part
of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“This is just amazing,” says
Porter, a mammography
technologist. “This is great work.”
Porter says the clinic, which is in
its third year of operation, continues
to be successful in bringing women,
sometimes whole vans full, in for
testing.
“It’s just like the Golden Girls,”
she says in reference to the one-time
hit TV show, she also notes women,
and especially seniors, appreciate
having a breast screening clinic so
close to home.
In the fundraiser, $5 from every
$18.99 Take Care Bouquet
purchased at Luann’s Country
Flowers in Blyth, Cooke’s Florist in
Clinton, Village Vines in Exeter and
Blooms ‘N’ Rooms in Seaforth, was
collected to benefit the clinic.
The bouquets were also affixed
with pertinent information about
breast cancer screening.
Taylor notes the fundraiser, which
she started last year, will hppefully
expand to include all of county
florists in the new year. Statistics
show one in nine women is
diagnosed with breast cancer and
early detection plays a key role in
effectively fighting the disease.

THE EDITOR,
We had the pleasure in attending A
Gift of Song, a tribute to the life of
Mary Hearn on Saturday evening.
What a wonderful evening it was.
We are so fortunate in having this
beautiful classic music right in
Blyth.
There were hand bells by Nancy
Ross Hearn and Alex Ross. Also
performing were the Huron Harp
Ensemble, McKay Choristers,
Wesley-Willis/Ontario Street United
Church choirs, the talented Hearn
family, Blyth Festival Singers and
the Kincardine Brass Band.
It was surreal sitting in this full
house, listening to and seeing these
wonderfully talented singers and
musicians.
A first-class act!
Lois van Vliet.
