HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2005-11-17, Page 9Lakers to play for ‘Little Stanley’ The Huron-Perth Lakers PeeWee team has been invited to attend the Quebec PeeWee Tournament in Quebec City next February. Often called the Little Stanley Cup, the tournament includes over 100 of the best AAA PeeWee teams in the world. This is the first Laker team to participate in the tournament. “Our players work hard and their record over the past year created this opportunity. Being included at the Quebec tournament is all about performance. I am thrilled for the boys.” says Dave Partridge, head coach. Blyth Kings fall to Seaforth The Clinton arena was the location of the Blyth and Seaforth Bantam broomball game, at noon, on Saturday, Nov. 12. The Blyth Kings were first on the scoreboard when, Drayson Nairn made a nice crossover pass with the ball to left winger, Jordon Rinn. Rinn shot the ball into the corner of the net for the goal. There were several goal attempts from both teams, but at the end of the first period, the Kings were ahead 1 - 0. Tykes play in Howick tourney The Blyth Tyke II hockey team travelled to Howick for a day tournament recently. The first game was played at 9:15 a.m. against the Langford Leafs. Langford scored the first couple of goals. Blyth started the scoring with Hunter Dale scoring three and Amy Boyce with one. Justin Rodger scored one assisted by Drew Bromley. Ending the scoring for Atom Girls host Kincardine The Blyth Atom girls team played host to the Kincardine team on Saturday. Nov. 12. Lexi Smith put Blyth on the board, midway through the first. The defensive play of Justine Reid and Jordan Teed shut down many scoring chances by Kincardine. Kincardine kept the pressure on and tied the game up in the final Rollers tie Seaforth On Wednesday, Nov. 9, the Blyth PeeWee Rollers went to Seaforth to play broomball. Both teams hit the ice with lots of excitement and energy. The ball was in both ends of the arena, but neither team was able to score. The Seaforth and Blyth goaltenders made several saves during the game. Jonathon Hakkers was the Rollers goalie for the night. He did a great job covering the net as he earned a shutout. A two-minute overtime was played but neither of the teams could score a goal. Blyth players are working hard and improving in their positioning and their game-playing skills. This week the Blyth Rollers “fantastic forwards” were: Wyatt Bearss, Brittany Boyce, Murray Dale, Derek DeBoer, Tilynn Ducharme, Christina Eckert, Tori Kellington, Marlayna Kolkman, Jasmine Mason, Lauren McNichol, Laura Souch and Curtis Terpstra. Teams from 16 countries will meet in Quebec for the 10-day tournament and tournament organizers predict over 200,000 people will attend the games, some of which will be carried live on TV. The Quebec tournament is considered the highlight of many minor hockey careers, even by the legends. Wayne Gretzky is quoted as saying, “Until I won my first Stanley Cup, the most exciting thing in my hockey career was the Quebec tournament.” The tournament alumni list includes Gretzky and over 800 other NHL players. Seaforth came on strong after halftime and took a hard shot on the net, that fortunately hit Blyth’s crossbar. It wasn’t long before Seaforth sneaked a goal in the right comer of Blyth’s net to tie up the game. Blyth was all over the Seaforth net halfway through the second period, but the Kings were unable to score. Seaforth scored on a breakaway to break the tie. As there was more ice time after the clock ran through regular play, Blyth was Bromley with one. The final score was 8-6 for Langford. Playing an excellent game in net was Brendan Howson. The second game was played against St. George. Goals for Blyth were scored by Bromley with four and Justin Rodger with three. The final score for this game was 7-5 for Blyth. Netminder was Dale. Game three brought them to play minutes of the first. Some great saves were made by netminder Courtney Middegaal but Kincardine kept applying pressure during the second and scored 3. The forwards Kelsey Kerr, Chloe Middegaal, Rebecca Chalmers, Kayla Dale, MacKenzie McGavin and Nicole Middegaal worked hard in the oppositions end but came up short. Many great scoring chances The Laker PeeWee team includes 12-year-old players from across Huron and Perth Counties and beyond. Locals are Blyth’s Grant Sparling and Collin Whitfield. The team was AAA Alliance Easter Division Champion last season. Over 120 players are signed to Huron-Perth Lakers teams in seven age categories. Teams compete in the Alliance Hockey Association against teams from Windsor, Chatham-Kent, Sun County, London, Elgin-Middlesex, Brantford, Hamilton, Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge. the teams pulled their goalies and played overtime. Nairn made a nice pass to Daniel Dery for a Blyth goal. Seaforth went on to score two more goals. Dery was able to score one more goal before the game was over. The final score was 4 - 3 for Seaforth. Both teams played a very strong game. Dery was named “Man of the Match,” by Coach Jennifer Miltenberg for his great effort to help the team. These two teams were fairly evenly matched with Blyth doing most of the scoring in the first half and Brussels coming back in the last half of the game. Goals for Blyth scored by Dale with three and Bromley with one. Rodger played a great game in net with the score being tied at the end of the game. Coaching staff for the weekend was Steve Howson, Jeff Howson and Mike Kerr. To the ‘noire It was Listowel against Goderich in the semi-finals of the Brussels Optimist Atom tournament on Sunday. Moving on to the next round was Listowel as the team defeated their Opponents 5-4. (Vicky Bremner photo) were had by these players. Finally in the third, Blyth had some rushing efforts from their defence that materialized in unassisted goals by Laura Higgins and Shelsie Popp. Kincardine scored four more in the third. The final was 8-3 Kincardine.
