The games begin
It was the home team that kicked off the annual Brussels Optimist Atom tournament on Friday
night with a game against Blyth. Unfortunately, home ice proved no advantage as the visitors

Novices slum door on Wallace
Novices win C title
The Blyth Novices showed little
mercy to the visiting Wallace team
on Nov. 10
While bulging the twine no less
than 11 times, the hosts were also
strong defensively and shut the
visitors down. Goalie Dalton Carey
posted the shutout.
Blyth got off to a solid lead with
three goals in the first period off the
sticks of Ashley Higgins, Brendan
Hallahan and Dustin Pennington.
Creditted with assists were Curtis
Raynard and Mackenzie Nesbitt
with two, Higgins and Dallas
Coultes.
Despite the three-point lead Blyth
showed no mercy adding another
six goals in the middle period.
Josh VanSoest, with helpers from
Dustin Treble and Dylan Walton
skated in to put the team ahead
Blyth Tykes battle Brussels
Brussels Tykes travelled to play
Blyth 1 on Saturday, Nov. 12.
Blyth started the scoring shortly
after the puck dropped. Amy Boyce
fought for the puck and put it in the
net, unassisted. Scoring a hattrick for
Blyth was Hunter Dale. Justin
Rodger assisted on one.
Brussels then began scoring with
Saugeen Shores edge Brussels
Saugeen Shores hosted Brussels
Midget Girls Sunday night in Port
Elgin.
Brussels girls opened the scoring
in the first. Ashley Sholdice scored
through the legs of the Saugeen
Shore goaltender, assisted by Lacey
McArter.
Saugeen Shores tied up the game
in the second.
With 23 seconds left in the third
Saugeen Shores clinched the win.
The hosts had the momentum
throughout the entire game.
Brussels star player of the game
was goaltender Brianne Wheeler
who made many saves to keep the
score 2-1.
Brussels Midget Girls next home
games are Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1:30
p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 20 at 6:30
p.m.
by four. A minute later,
Ryan Plunkett and Autumn
Wightman set up the play for
Raynard to score.
Van Soest put another between the
pipes with assists creditted to
Coultes and Treble. Hallahan
handed off to Raynard who in turn
set up the play for Higgins to light
the light a second time. Pennington
slid one past the goalie after a
handoff from Plunkett to Wightman.
Then with less than a minute left
before the buzzer, VanSoest nailed
his hattrick. Treble and Higgins
earned the assists.
Blyth eased off in the third with
Pennington scoring two to get his
hattrick plus one. Van Soest,
Raynard, Higgins and Hallahan
assisted.
On Nov. 12 the team travelled to
goals by Kiaren Jared, Logan
Kellington with three, Delayna
Smith with two and Dawson
Peachey.
Blyth’s final goal was scored by
Rodger, assisted by Dale. Near
misses in front of the Brussels’ net
were made by Cody Treble and
Morgan Howson.
September 25th marked the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront
Marathon, in which "The J-Walkers" power-walked 21.1 km in
honour of Jackie Wilkinson (from Mildmay) and Jerry deBruyn
(from Clifford) who were diagnosed with a blood-related cancer.

Monkton and added another victory.
The hosts jumped on the
scoreboard in the first, then took at
two-point lead with another in the
second. With two-and-a-half
minutes remaining in the period,
however, VanSoest glided in to bring
his team within one. The assist went
to Pennington. Just seconds later,
Wightman set up Raynard to score
and even things up going into the
third.
Rodger with a handoff from
Treble to Plunkett put Blyth ahead
for the first time mid-way through
the third period. Then with 13
seconds on the clock, the visitors
sealed the victory with another goal
off the stick of Raynard, assisted by
Hallahan.
Carey was solid between the pipes
in this 4-2 contest.
A great game was played by
Brendan “snowplow” Howson.
Drew Bromley had an excellent
game between the pipes.
The final score was 7-4 for
Brussels.
Blyth’s next home game is
Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m.
This past weekend the Brussels
Novices played in the Zurich
tournament.
Saturday morning the Novices
faced off against Ilderton. After a
scoreless first period Ilderton got on
the board with a pair of quick goals.
Wyatt Ducharme responded for
Brussels late in the period to cut the
lead to 2-1. Ben Hruska got the lone
assist.
In the third Ilderton put the game
away with a pair of goals and handed
Brussels a 4-1 loss.
Brussels’ next action was against
Watford. Early in the first Lexi
Smith scored from Hruska to give
Brussels the lead. Watford evened
things up before heading into the
second.
Ducharme, put Brussels ahead
unassisted before Watford would
again tie it. Mitch Kellington gave
Brussels a 3-2 lead heading into the
third.
Watford responded with four
unanswered goals and took the game
6-3. With the two losses Brussels
played in the C final against Zurich.
Brussels Bantams beat
Milverton at home
The 2005 Brussels Bantam team
consists of a solid squad with 14
players.
The first home game against
Milverton, saw the team a little
rusty, but the end result was in their
favour. Scoring for Brussels were
Evan Ducharme with a hattrick, Ben
Gowing, Cody SubjecLand Brendan
Stretton.
Travelling to Hensall the team
outscored Hensall 7-0. Catching the
net for Brussels were Subject,
Westin McLeod, and Ducharme
with four. Brian Burgess had a goal
and four assists.
The Bantams took on Elma-Logan
in game three with grit and
determination. Unfortunately, Elma
came on too strong and defeated
their hosts 7-4.
Finding the twine for Brussels
were Taylor Prior, one goal, two
assists; Gowing, one goal;
Ducharme, one goal; Stretton with
one. Other assists were credited to
Blake Cardiff, McLeod, Robert
Cronin and Burgess.

At the North Huron Wescast Arena

NORTH HURON MINOR HOCKEY NIGHT
North Huron Minor Hockey players (under 12)
will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Several prize draws during the game.
Grand Prize winner will receive half of their
minor hockey registration.
A parent must be present to claim the prize.
Logan Clark scored his first of the
year from Kai Hiemstra and Tim
Waechter to give Brussels an early
lead. Jason Baxter, with his first of
the year, increased the lead to 2-0.
Kellington and Scott Baan assisted.
Midway through the first Hiemstra
increased the lead to 4-0 with a pair
of goals. Hruska and Scott Dolmage
assisted.
Reece Me Arter scored to increase
the lead to five. Hayden Tenpas and
Smith set up Taylor Higgins to finish
the first period scoring.
Zurich cut into the lead early in the
second before McArter scored again.
Hiemstra, from Colton Hastings and
Hruska, then made it 8-1.
Zurich made it 8-2 before Hruska
set up Smith to give Brussels a 9-2
lead after two.
Ducharme, from Baxter, and
Hiemstra, from Waechter, finished
the scoring to give Brussels an 11-2
victory and the C final trophy.
Brussels next action is in
Milverton Friday night, then back
home to host Elma Logan Saturday
at 10 a.m. _
Brussels was up against Listowel
Nov. 2. It was end-to-end action
with well-matched teams. Goals for
Brussels were scored by Burgess,
Gowing, Subject with two and
Cole McLean with his first of the
season.
With the team starting to gel they
took on Mitchell, Nov. 9. Both
teams spent a lot of time in the box
with 33 minutes in penalties.
At the end of two periods the
game was tied at three. Some
confusion and foolish plays by
Brussels let the Mitchell team score
and they managed to hang on for the
win.
Bulging the twine for Brussels
were Subject with two and
Ducharme with one. Stretton got the
only assist.
Rounding out the Bantam roster
are Thomas Johnston, Herbie
Runstedler and Gavin Bowers.
Playing well between the pipes is
Ryan Smith.
The team travels to Zurich, Nov.
