Good turnout to Remembrance Day service By Jo-Ann McDonald This year, a beautiful sunny Nov. 11 brought a large crowd out to participate and to show their respect at the Brussels Legion Remembrance Day service. There were 35 wreaths laid by the various groups, organizations, churches and families. Padre Tom Wilson led the scripture and prayer. The church service was held at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church with Father John Johnson delivering a reflective message from a personal experience. Following the parade back to the Legion, led by Sergeant- at-Arms Tulley of the Brussels Cadet Corps, over 100 enjoyed the soup and sandwiches supplied by the Legion executive. There were approximately a dozen Legion members on hand to conduct the Remembrance service at Huronlea at 2 p.m. The service was led by poppy chairman Allyson Cardiff and pipe major Donald Martin played Amazing Grace. There were nearly 50 residents watching the service. An Honours and Awards evening was also held on Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. following the ham and scalloped potato supper enjoyed by 100 people. There were presentations of years of service pins, bars and medals, special recognition gifts and two special presentations. Comrade President Norm Dobson conducted opening ceremonies and introduced guest Comrade Eric Ross, vice-chairman of Ontario Provincial Command. He turned the evening over to chairman Comrade Rick McDonald of the Honours and Awards committee who introduced committee members Comrades John Harrison, Sandra Josling, Allyson Cardiff and Jo-Ann McDonald. Comrades John Harrison and Norm Dobson presented the years of service pins to recipients as follows: five-year voting affiliate pins to Lome Brown, Joan Cardiff, Murray Cardiff, Max Demaray, Barrie Currie and Howard Hackwell; five-year associate pins to Helen Brenie, Jim Brown, Rob Cardiff, Mike Dauphin, Helen Dobson, Lloyd Glanville, Gord Jacklin, Mabel Glanville, LeeAnn Konarski, Brenda and Dave Linton, Anita Little, Neil McDonald, Leona McDonald, Andy Overholt and Patti VanderMeer; 10-year associate pins to Ken Bird, Jim Dobson, John and Julie Harrison, Ron Knight and Margo Richardson; 15-year associate pins presented to Allyson Cardiff, Helen Cardiff, Donald Dunbar, Anne Elliott, Lisa Glanville, Sandra Josling, Ruth Recognition Presentations were made to Brussels Legion Comrades at the Honours and Awards evening held on Friday night. Ordinary members presented with pins included: five-year pin to Jason VanderMeere; 20-year pins to Linda Bird and Bill Steadwell; 25-year pins to Lyle Brothers, Ken Miller, Cecil Moore and Kevin Nichol; 30-year pins to Bob Fowler, Doug Logan, Al Nichol and Charles Proctor; 35-year pin to Glenn Bridge. There were seven recipients of 60- year pins with Ross Bennett, Max Oldfield and Gord Workman able to be present. Gordon Nichol and Archie Henderson’s pins were presented to family members and ill health prevented the other two from attending, but their pins will be sent or presented at a later date. Medal and bars were presented by Comrades Norm Dobson and Sandra Josling to Comrades Jo-Ann McDonald, first vice-president bar; John Harrison, membership bar, Allyson Cardiff, secretary bar; Norm Dobson, first vice-president bar; Mabel Glanville, past office medal (POM) and executive and service officer bar; Andy Overholt, POM and executive and second vice-president bar; Deb Cann, POM and executive bar; Greg Wilson, POM and executive bar; Mike Dauphin, POM and executive bar; Gary Dauphin, POM and executive and sports officer bar; Grace and Charlie Proctor, POM and senior officer bars. The evening continued with Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald conducting initiation of new member Catrina Josling. Comrade Allyson Cardiff then presented the Friendship Award to the Brussels Optimist Club representative Greg Wilson. Certificates of Merit were presented to individuals who are conscientious and willing supporters of the Brussels legion although not members. Receiving certificates and fruit baskets were George Somers, Judy Lee and Audrey Hackwell and Howard. Special recognition and fruit baskets were presented to six members of the Legion who are dedicated to supporting and working at special functions of the Branch: Comrade Helen Dobson for supplying desserts at every Friday night supper and for her role on the catering committee; Comrades Julie Harrison and Jo-Ann McDonald for running the Sunday night dafices every two weeks, Comrades Leona McDonald and Marg Bennett for running the Saturday euchres every two weeks and Comrade Sandra Josling for going above and beyond her job responsibilities for the good of the Branch. Comrade Cardiff presented a cheque to Captain Grobbo of the Brussels Cadet Corps on behalf of the Branch. A very special presentation was made by Comrades Jo-Ann Awards Eric Ross, centre, received a life membership to the Royal Canadian Legion for his dedication to Branch 218 and to his involvement in all levels of the Legion. Comrade Eric Ross was presented with a life membership to the Royal Canadian Legion for his dedication to the Brussels Branch 218 and his involvement in all levels of the Royal Canadian Legion. He has been involved in all special events or occasions that Branch 218 has hosted and is a source of valuable information to all members of the Legion. Branch 218 is proud of Comrade Ross and his achievements and was honoured to present him with his life membership. This being the Year of the Veteran a special wine has been produced in limited quantities and is available at limited locations. Comrade Ross was able to procure a few bottles, which he shared among those attending the night’s activities. There was a special Open Monday - Friday 8-9 Saturday 8 - 6 Sunday 10-5 —ing : toast made to Brussels veterans and the year of the veteran by Comrade Eric Ross. A presentation by Huron East mayor Joe Seili and wife Deb, of a new picture of the Queen was made to President Norm Dobson at the end of the evening. It was a wonderful night and many Comrades who had not been to the branch in awhile enjoyed the meal, the evening and the comradeship that followed. Huron County darjs were held Saturday at the Branch with over 40 men taking aim at the boards. The Friday night supper will be lasagna. The general meeting is Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. Members are all invited to attend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Alf Sutton and his family at this time as he is in London Hospital.
