Swept Away,
BURLINGTON, IA., April 7.—It is re
ported that Ptophetstown, Ill,, has been
sweyt away by a eyelone. There are
no particulars, except that twenty
freight cars were blown to atoms, and
that the whole , town has been swept
from the face of the earth and many
people have been killed. The wires
aro all down, and at this hour (11 pm.)
it seems probable that no additional in-
formation will be secured to -night.
Roasted to Death,
Paterson, N. J., April 5.—Mrs, Carrie
Young, aged 40 years, was found dead
in her room, on. Northwest street in
this city, yesterday morning. The
woman had boon ill for several days,
and was visited and cared for until a
late hour by friends. When discover-
ed her body was lying in the centre of
the room burned almost to <a'crisp. Be-
side it was a broken lamp. - She had
;eft her bed and attempted to walk
with the Iamp in her hand, when, be
ing overcome by weakness, she fell
and her clothing caught fire, and she
was slowly roasted to death. The wo-
man's husband hacl deserted her.
In The Tornado's Path,
LonisvILLiD, Ky., April 7.—It is just
learned here Harper's Ferry, Henry
county, was,almost completely destroy•
ed by the recent tornado. The village
composed of less than two dozen houses,
is a considerable distance from any
railroad. All the houses were in the
of the tornado. Men; women and child-
ren were buried -beneath the ruins. Not
a house remained, standing, and the
whole snrrounding country was cover-
ed with wreckage. Mrs. Laura Thom-
as, the wife of a farmer, was found
dead by the side of a large tree a hun-
dred yards from her home. An infant
child of Farmer Fletcher was found
beneath the ruins of its father's res-
idence smothered to death. 'Seven or
eight were injured badly, but none fa-
tally. The'property loss will amount
to $20,000.
Around About Us.
Mr. John Klienfield, of Dashwood,
has purchased a new steam thrasher,
which will be a boon to this neighbor-
hood.
Poisoned On Tuesday evening last
.a little son of Mr. E.' Richardson, of
Wellington street north, St. Marys,
complained of feeling ill, but nothing
serious was thought of until a short
time after, when his mother found him
prostrate and stiff in another room.
Medical aid was at once procured,
when it was ascertained that the child
had eaten some ;ort of poison supposed
to be wild parsnip. At last accounts
the child was progressing favorable.
SODDEN DEATH. -An old and respect-
ed citizen of St. Marys, in the person of
Mr. Henry Morril, died very suddenly
at his residence in the West Ward on
the 26th ult. He had been ailing for
several days but had sufficiently re-
covered to walk around the house, and
upon the evening of his death he had
sat at his usual place at the table and
ate a moderately hearty supper. Al-
most immediately after, he complained
of a severe pain in the region of the
heart and within half an hour he ex-
pired. Deceased was one of the early
pioneers of Blanshard, having came to
this country from Scotland and settled
on the Base line in the year 1840.
blob.—On Thhn•sday night last the
dwelling house and farut buildings of
Mr. Henry Carpenter, of Logan, were
completely destroyed by fire. The fire
originated in the chimney of the dwell -
inn house. It caught fire in the after
noon, but was supposed to have burned
out, but a spark must have got in
somewhere and lay smouldering, for
about eleven o'clock the flames burst
out and spread so rapidly that nothing
could be done to save the building,
There was a very high wind prevail
ing at the time • and tlhe
fire 50011 communicated with the barn
a.nd other outbuildings, and all were
destroyed. Mr. Carpenter got a good
portion of the furniture out of • the
house, and all the 'animals and most of.
the other movable articles were saved
from the out buildings, except a gihan-
tity of hay which was destroyed.
There was an insurance of $500, but
although the buildings were old and
not very- 'valuable the loss will con-
siderably exceed the insurance.'

throats swelled, and spite of all remedies
they all died except one, which was
