SMITH The community bid farewell to one of its most familiar residents last week. James W. Smith of Brussels passed away peacefully at Seaforth Community Hospital on Monday, Oct. 31, 2005. He was in his 97th year. There were few at the coffee shop who didn’t know Jim as he continued to enjoy his morning trips there for socializing. Always a prominent face in the community, Jim was involved throughout his life in such activities as the curling club and the agricultural society. A plaque bears his name, along with,. several others from the "Gentlemen’s Club”, a group of men who met for cards and storytelling in a room above the old municipal office for many years. Blessed with a dry wit and sharp mind until the end, Jim always had a story to tell and looked forward to every day. Jim was born in Grey Twp. on Feb. 19, 1909. He was predeceased by his beloved wife the former Anne Inglis in 1989. Left to mourn his passing are his children. Ron and wife Lillian of Harrison, Donna Gibbings and her husband Bob of Clinton and Gerald and his wife Nancy of Belmore. He was the dear grandfather of Mami Townend and husband Gerry, Jamie Gibbings and wife Lisa, Shane Smith and wife Marianne and Scott Smith. Jim was loved as well by his great-granddaughters Mikayla, Cariee, Taylor and Ava and by his in-laws Sam Sweeney and Jean Deathe. Jim was predeceased by his brothers Hugh, Charlie and Bill and by his sisters Jean, Marion, Elizabeth, Margaret and Margery. Friends were received by the family from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home. The funeral was conducted there on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Cathrine Campbell officiating. Remembrances of Jim were given by his grandsons Scott Smith and Jamie Gibbings and by his nephew Murray Cardiff. The burial took place in Brussels Cemetery with Murray Houston, Graeme Craig, Scott Smith, Shane Smith, Jamie Gibbings and Mami Townend as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Ted Alexander, Charlie Thomas and Jeff Cardiff. As expressions of sympathy memorial donations were made to Brussels United Church or to the hospital foundation of one’s choice. On-line condolences may be made at www.schimanskifamilyfuneralhome .com MARGARET BATEMAN Margaret Bateman passed away peacefully at Listowel Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005. She resided in Listowel and was formerly of Ethel. She was born 76 years ago in West Williams Township, a daughter of the late Robert and Laura (Harlton) Cathers. Margaret was the beloved wife of the late Robert Bateman who predeceased her in 2002. She was the loving mother of Elaine and Roy Ceal of Prince George, B.C., Mary Sproul and Reinhard Jesse of Kitchener, Carol Bateman of Listowel, Gail and Terry Sproul of Ethel, Wendy and Dan Dillon of Wroxeter and Glenda and Gerard Ducharme of Ethel, special grandma grandchildren and grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter Colleen Bateman in infancy, sister Hazel and her husband Everet Brown, brothers James Cathers, Ralph Cathers in infancy and brother-in-law Stuart Cochrane. Margaret’s family invited relatives and friends to share their memories at Peebles Funeral Home, 141 John St., Atwood, on Monday, Nov. 7 from 2 - 4 and 7-9 p.m. where the funeral service was held on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. Rev. George Russell officia­ ted. Interment followed in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel. R.W. “PAT” POWELL Robert Wellington Powell, 96, of 97 Huron St., Stratford passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family at the Stratford General Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005. Born in East Wawanosh Twp., Huron County, he was the son of the late Robert Jeffrey Powel! and the former Laura Elsie Code. Until moving to Stratford in 1935, Pat worked in his father’s grocery store and was also a member of the Blyth Fire Department. He was the last surviving member of the 1933-34 Fire Department. He had owned and operated Powell’s Grocery and Meat Store at 475 Ontario St. from 1935 to 1954 and then was a sales representative for the Co-operators Insurance from 1955 to 1974. Pat was a. member of Masonic Lodge, Stratford Branch #332 A.F. and A.M. and had received his 70- year pin in 2005, a First Principal of Tecumseh Chapter RAM, a former member of the Stratford Rotary Club, a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Stratford and a member of the Community of Christ Church, Stratford. He was the beloved husband for 66 years of Isabelle (Withrow) Powell whom he married at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Aug. 23, 1939. He is joyfully remembered by his daughters Christine and her husband Richard McCully and their daughter Kayland of Newmarket and Susan Erb and her husband Rev. Art Hodgson of Stratford and their family Tyson Erb and partner Anita Chong of Toronto, Keely (Erb) and husband David Jennings and their family Griffin Raymond Wellington Jennings, Taylor and Morgan Jennings of London and Michael Hodgson and wife Carolyn of Kitchener and Peter Hodgson of Surrey, British Columbia. He was the dear brother of Beth and her husband Jack O’Bright of Thamesford and dear brother-in- law of Robert Withrow and wife Ariel of Stratford and Dorothy Powell of Seaforth. Pat is fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews and their families. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter Sharon in infancy, a brother George Powell, a son-in-law Roger Erb and his stepmother Anne Powell. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held at the Community of Christ Church, 226 Forman Ave., Stratford on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. Evangelist William Leney officiated. Burial of his cremated remains will be in Avondale Cemetery, Stratford. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Heritage Fund of the Community of Christ Church or the VON through 'the Heinbuck Funeral Home, 156 Albert St., Stratford.
