Website helps those searching for veterans
By Karen Webster
With 2005 being designated as the
Year of the Veteran many people are
interested in the war service of the
relatives but do not have much
information. Many times the men
and women who saw active duty
were reticent about it. A soldier who
did much of the recruiting for the
Huron 161st Battalion in 1916, Isaac
Hetherington, remarked when he
returned home from France that no
one could go overseas and come
back quite the same. “We have
passed through scenes we can never
forget.”
But while these images would
remain with the veterans they often
choose not to share them with their
families.
Londesborough-area resident
Ltfura Scott was curious about her
grandfather’s service. When she
learned of the website for the
National Archives, she easily found
a copy of his attestation paper. This
document is the one signed when the
recruit enlisted or was drafted.
Laura called her mother right
away, who in turn had her sister
come over to her house where they
called up their father’s paper. They
all found the experience awesome.
The National Archives collection
website is a real treasure trove! The
attestation papers of almost all of the
600,000 personnel of the 1914-1918
war are available to the public on
line. These attestation papers include
such information as name,
regimental number, birth date, place
of birth, occupation, next of kin,
present address, religion, previous
military service, and physical
characteristics and health.
Quite often the battalion the
soldier was assigned to is also on the
sheet. The attestation papers are
accessible at
collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02
0106_e.html
Another site that is valuable is that
of the Virtual War Museum that lists
the men and women from both
World Wars who died in service to
their country.
In most cases the name,
regimental number, battalion, age,
next of kin and very detailed
directions to their burial ground are
included.
Also included in the Virtual War
Museum is an invitation for families
or other interested persons to submit
a photo and biographical
information of service personnel
found on that site To go to this site

There are other sources of
information for some of the
members of the Huron Battalion of
which Blyth had its own B
Company. Research on this group
was conducted by Sandy McDonald
in the 1980s and was compiled in a
booklet called Huron Overseas.
This booklet is available at local
libraries as well as the Huron County
Museum.
People interested in the actual
service records can send for them.
There arc some restrictions on the
records that can be given out to those
other than the person whose record
they are. For records of those who
served after 1918, the written
permission of that person is
required.
If the person is deceased for less
than 20 years, proof of death and
proof of relationship is required. For
the records of those deceased over
20 years the proof of relationship is
not required.
The Archives charges 40 cents for
each photocopied sheet and will
only copy the entire file, not just
certain sections of it. Because
there is such a high volume of
requests, the Archives will only
respond to written or faxed
communications.
To send for service documents,

Canada, Textual Reproduction
