HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2005-11-10, Page 9Triple A Midget Girls win fall challenge cup The Saugeen Maitland AA Midget girls hockey team had a successful weekend in Waterloo as they were the champions in the Fall Challenge Cup Girls Hockey Tournament. The Lightning played its first game on Friday against Clarington. Cassy Stafford was strong in net as she earned a shutout while her teammates scored five goals. Chantelle Eckenswiller opened the scoring with the assist going to Brittney Peters of Blyth. Allison Quennell scored the second goal on a pass from Joelle Reid and Shalena Dale and then the same girls set up Kendall Whitfield of Blyth for the next goal. Eckenswiller picked up a rebound from a shot taken by Michelle Kittel and set up by Peters to score the fourth goal. Eckenswiller hit the crossbar on her next breakaway but Stacey Scholten was positioned to put the puck in the net. Kittel also earned an assist on the final goal. Wheeler goalie of the week Colgate University’s and Brussels own Brook Wheeler was named ECAC’s goaltender of the week recently. Several family members and friends travelled to Hamilton, New York to watch Wheeler and the university’s women’s hockey team savour its first ECAC Hockey League victory of the year on Friday, Nov. 4, in a 3-0 shutout over Brown. The first period went scoreless, but the Colgate Raiders dominated from the drop of the puck, outshooting Brown, who is receiving votes in both national polls, 17-3/ 7 tables in play at euchre party There were seven tables of players at Friday night euchre in Cranbrook Hall. The night was hosted by Viola Adams, Allan Edgar, Neil Hatt and Edna McLellan. Winners were: travelling lone hands, Isabelle Craig; share-the-wealth, Leona McDonald, Bill Craig; high lady, Leota Thompson; low lady, Shirley Verstoep; high man, John Subject; low man, Bill Craig; most lone hands, Leona McDonald, Marion Harrison, Adrian Verstoep and Eileen Mannl lucky tallies, Margaret Smith, Sharon Smith, Iola Subject, Leslie Knight, Mary Davidson, Ross Stephenson, Myrna Burnett, Neil Hatt, Eleanor Stevenson, Joan Jacobs, Yvonne Knight and Allan Edgar. The next euchre will be held on Friday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. Mary Huether, Peebles, Lloyd Verna Crawford, Freeman, Beryl The girls played their second game of the tournament on Friday night. As always, the defence played a very strong game in their own end and in the offensive zone. There was no scoring in the game until the third period. Kittel finally got one by the goalie on a pass from Scholten. Once the Saugeen team got on the scoreboard, they seemed to find the net more often. Kassy Avery scored the second goal on a pass from Dale and Quennell Scholten stuffed one in the net after receiving a pass linemates, Kittel Eckenswiller. The final goal was scored by Tara O’Reilley on a pass from Janette Hammell. Syd Brown played well in net as she earned a shutout during the four-goal game. The two consecutive wins gave the girls an automatic bye to the semi finals which were played on Sunday morning when they faced the a from and Colgate’s Brook Wheeler from Brussels, was able to hold off the offence. The Raiders outshot the Bears 28-20 in the game. Colgate’s special teams were able to convert 2-for-9 on the power-play, while Brown went 0-for-6. Brown was unable to sneak the puck past Wheeler, who made 20 saves in her first shutout of the season. Colgate is now 2-3-2 on the season and 1-0 in the league, while Brown falls to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the conference. On Saturday, Nov. 5 Colgate defeated Yale 4-2, making it a weekend sweep. The lone goal was scored again by a defensive player, Peters, on a pass from Scholten. Stafford had yet another shutout. The championship game was played Sunday evening against Stoney Creek. At the end of regulation time, the game was scoreless. Brown was amazing in net, as was the goalie from the opposition. The only goal of the game was scored at 2:54 of the overtime period on a blistering shot from the point coming from the stick of Jenny Bults. The girls and the coaching staff were presented with a banner, large gold medallions and their team name will be inscribed trophy. Syd Brown was named championship. on the tournament MVP of the Wheeler stacked the pads on all 12 Yale shots in the third period, stopping some stunners, allowing Colgate to settle back into their groove and find their momentum. Shots were even at 25 apiece, with Wheeler making 23 saves. Colgate went 2-for- 5 in the power-play, while Yale was l-for-4. (Vicky Bremner photo) Novices host Elma Logan The Brussels Novices played a home game this past Tuesday against Elma Logan. Brussels got off to a quick start when Hayden TenPas scored unassisted less than a minute in. Wyatt Ducharme gave the home side a 2-0 lead midway through the first. Mitch Kellington assisted. Scott Dolmage from TenPas, and Ducharme unassisted scored the only second-period goals. The third period would see Brussels explode with six goals. Taylor Higgins scored from Lexi Smith, then Ducharme bulged the twine unassisted. Tim Waechter’s goal was assisted by Kai Hiemstra. from Smith then Ducharme from Kellington to give Brussels a 10-0 lead. Late in the third Elma Ten Pas scored Logan got one by goalie Matt McNichol to make the final 10-1. On Saturday, Brussels travelled to Drayton for the second meeting of the season. Drayton scored four times in the first five minutes. Brussels fought back and took the play to Drayton the rest of the game only to find Midgets edge Milverton The Brussels WOAA Midgets played away in Milverton on Sunday night and edged their hosts 2-1. Both Brussels goals came in the first period, the first when the Corbett brothers teamed up. Adam bulged the twine, assisted by Chris. Before the period ended, Christopher Juzi skated in the back of the net once off the stick of Ducharme. Jason Baxter and Mitch Kellington assisted. Drayton then scored three more to make the final 7-1. McNichol played his best game of the season making many key saves. Brussels next sees action this weekend at the Zurich tournament. unassisted to increase the visitors’ lead. Milverton cut the score in the second with a goal by Dylan Steckly, but Brussels was able to ha.ig onto the lead through the final period. Doing a great job in net for the visitors was Kyle Gibson. The team played Wallace at 8 p.m. Monday night.
