Kings rule
The Blyth Kings Bantam boys had
a very windy and wet drive, as they
headed to Palmerston to play a 5
p.m. game on Sunday, Nov. 6.
Several of the Kings players were
absent, so with only 11 players each
of those in attendance had lots of ice
time. With the regular goalie absent,
Kurtis Kolkman suited up to cover
Blyth’s net and did a great job.
Both teams were keen to hit the
ice. The Kings centre forward, Dane
Nickel stole the ball away from
Palmerston and scored the first goal
of the game. It wasn’t long however
before Palmerston tied it.
During the last few minutes of the
first period, a Blyth forward
received a penalty for high sticking.
in broomball game
Palmerston also received a high-
sticking penalty, then another
penalty for shoving a Blyth player
into the boards. Blyth tried to put the
ball into Palmerston’s net during the
penalties, but they were
unsuccessful.
At the end of the first period it was
a tied game.
In the second period, wing;
forward Chad Gorel passed the ball
to centre forward, Brent Drost, who
went behind the Palmerston net,
wrapped the ball around the comer
and scored the tie-breaking goal.
Blyth played hard and there were
several more scoring opportunities,
but the Palmerston goalie made
some great saves.
With five minutes left in the game,
the coaches decided to give the
teams the opportunity to practise
overtime. Palmerston had several
scoring opportunities, but Blyth
players were successful in coming
back to cover their net. Right wing,
Kurtis Gorel scored a goal for Blyth
in the overtime play, securing the
Kings’ lead. The final score was a 3-
l victory for the Blyth Kings.
Coach Jennifer Miltenberg named
left winger, Ross MacDonald as
“man of the match”, for his excellent
play as forward. Defensive player,
Shawn Reinink was runner-up for
the title for his great effort and for
listening to the coach when she
asked for position changes.• *Blyth Novices trounce Zurich
