When our hydro, and all that entails is cut off, we are momentarily at a loss. Usual happenings are suspended and concentrated thought is needed to spend the unusual time. Sunday here was a good time to ^ponder life as we know it and to then recall that not so long ago the many things we now take for granted were a real wonder, even a miracle. In the not so long ago, reading by lamp light and outdoor trips to the toilet were the usual routine. That is definitely not part of the good old days that are often recalled with such fond memories. Without the light switch to respond and the television and radio gone silent we are at a loss. Jim Smith’s final party on earth was last week as family and friends gathered to remember the good life that Jim enjoyed. Memories were shared of Jim and Anne’s life, most of it spent nearby. It was a time to celebrate community and how folks need to make the effort to be part of it. Both Jim and Anne always were alert to life outside themselves and a good sense of humour was part of it. Just as the trip to the cemetery was getting organized a sweet little skunk wandered through the vehicles and down toward the river. Folks, from the safety of distance chuckled openly thinking that Jim was getting the last laugh. Good bye old friend. A ‘farmer’ in London with strong local connections grew pumpkins this year that weighed more than he does soaking wet and got his picture in The London Free Press as a result. Four- year-old Kyle Stewart grew pumpkins from last year’s seeds that grew to weights of 90, 60. 50 and 49 lbs., while he weighs in at 50 lbs. He weeded, watered and picked his own garden which also included tomatoes, beans and asparagus this year. He hopes to add watermelons, cucumber, and sunflowers to the list next year. Stewart comes from a long line of Brussels residents. His great grandmother on his mother’s side was Viola May Fox (she married Harry Bowler) of Brussels, her father was Sylvester Fox also of Brussels and Stewart’s grandfather (Viola and Harry’s son) Ken Bowler was bom in Brussels. Other relatives currently living in the Brussels area include great great aunt Ethel and uncle Joe Brewer, Karen and Dave Hastings and families, Dianne and Brian Huether and families, Wayne and Hope Lowe, Murray and Ruth Lowe and family, and Jim and Ann Bosman and families from Winthrop. There was lots to do and see on the weekend as the house tours gave folks beautiful Christmas thoughts and ideas and the Legion craft sale offered the opportunity to start to do something about those thoughts. Give some thought to being part of the Santa Claus parade this year. At the very least, plan to be a vocal supporter of our village and the businesses and service clubs that make it tick so very well. See you at the parade on Nov. 26 at 5 p.m. with your Christmas duds on. Bye now, Betty G.W.
