PEOPLE AROUND
AUBURN
A great man in our community
passed away Oct. 26 in his 87th year.
Ernie Durnin was most certainly a
treasure in our area and well known
to most. Edward Ernest Durnin was
his title at birth on April 20, 1918.
however he was simply known as
Ernie to all.
Ernie was predeceased by his wife
Maxine (Ball) Durnin.
Ernie was well known for his
harmonic playing and his fiddle
music. House parties and nursing
homes were common places to find
Ernie sharing his talent. He enjoyed
most people and they most certainly
enjoyed him. He always had a story
or joke to tell and on occasion you
Crafters ’ heaven
Local residents spread out their handiwork at the Belgrave
Home Sweet Home craft fair on Saturday, Oct. 29. Tables
filled with knitting, quilts and other knick-knacks filled the
room at the Belgrave arena. Jean Teruit of Wingham
continued to work on more items while people browsed
through her work. (Heather Crawford photo)

The McCallum and Palla Funeral
Home in Goderich was crowded
beyond capacity as many came to
celebrate Ernie’s life and to mourn
his passing. Rev. Pat Cook of
Auburn officiated and along with
some shared remembrances from a
granddaughter and nephew, two of
Ernie’s great nephews played their
violins beautifully in a tribute to the
man who had not only taught them
the harmonice, but to love music as
well.
Ernie was laid to his well-
deserved rest in Ball's Cemetery.
Our sympathies go out to Ernie and
Maxine’s children Jack (June) Ron,
Doug, Dave (Lorna) along with 13
grandchildren' and li great
grandchildren.
Those in attendance returned to
Knox Church in Auburn for
refreshments, fellowship and
continued remembrances and once
again were honoured by the sounds
of just a small part of Ernie’s legacy
as Ethan and Marshall once again
paid tribute to their Great ’Jncle
Ernie.
You will be missed Ernie.
Goodbye old friend - goodbye.
The local seniors group met at the
home of Lois Haines’ in Fordwich
for a cup of tea and a visit. Lois
played the organ for everyone and a
great time was enjoyed. Following
the visit at Lois’s everyone attended
the Fordwich church for a delicious
turkey supper.
Jim and Grace Cartwright
attended the Oliver and Goodison
Connection at the home of Jim Irwin
near Paisley. The association has
only 79 members in all of Canada.
An exclusive group indeed. Primary
discussion of the day was plans lor
the International Convention in the
year 2007.
I hope everyone has had a safe and
happy Halloween. I spotted a couple
of ghosts earlier in the week but they
were friendly. But then of course,
they come visit me most days, not
just on Oct. 31 which suits me fine.
As long as they stay out of ii»v tea
and don’t interrupt me when I am
talking.
