Boyd and Muriel Taylor

30 years service to Canada
Boyd and Muriel Taylor live at
83140 Martin Line on a farm that
has been in the Taylor family since
before 1868, the year their home
was first build by Boyd’s great
grandfather.
Since farming was in his blood so,
also, was the weather which
controlled what chores could be
done and when.
Having a keen interest in the
weather was the first step to
becoming a volunteer weather
observer for the Government of
Canada when volunteers were being
recruited.
That was in 1975.
Since then Taylor has been
observing and recording daily
temperatures and rainfall amounts
at his home.
In addition, in the winter he also
measures the amounts of snowfall
and how much snow cover was on
the ground from day to day.
Last week the Taylors were
presented with a plaque celebrating
30 years of volunteer climate
observing for the Meteorological
Service of Canada.
Over the years Taylor’s
observations have provided the
following statistics for Station
Blyth hottest day, 36.5°C,
Thursday, July 7, 1988; coldest day.
-36.0°C, Sunday, Feb. 11, 1979;
hottest year, 9.2°C, in 1998; coldest
year, 5.3°C, 1978; wettest day,
137.0 mm rain, Wednesday, Sept.
11, 1986; snowiest day, 50.5
cms., Monday, Dec. 11, 2000;
wettest year, 1640.5 mm, 2000;
driest year, 779.8 mm, 1998;
snowiest season, 545 cms, 2000/01;
least snow, 136.2 cms,
1982/83;average yearly
temperature, 6.8°C; average
precipitation, 1131.1 mm and
average snowfall, 314.6 ms.
The Blyth UCW met in the church
parlour on Oct. 27 at 2 p.m.
There were 14 present.
Emily Phillips was in charge of
worship.
She spoke on being thankful for
one’s mother.
For the study, Ollie Craig spoke
on the caste system in Indian.
This is the largest hierarchical
system in the world today.
In Indian society, Hindus are*
stratified into four varnas, or caste
categories; the Brahman, or
priestly caste; the Kshatriya, or
warriors; the Vaisya, or trading
and artisan caste and the Sudra, or
manual labourers.
The rest of the population are
outcasts - literally untouchable to
the castes.
In April 2005 the UN
Commission on Human Rights
appointed two people to tackle
this problem.
The next meeting will be at 6:30
p.m. on Nov. 24 beginning with
potluck in the Sunday school room.
