PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo-Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 There were more local men away hunting recently. Heading to the Dryden area were Mike Boven. Lome Strickler and Clayton Riley. They were very successful in getting four moose and a bear. Our sympathies are extended to the family of John Cronyn who passed away last week. We hope Malinda Johnston is feeling better after being in the hospital. Returning from a trip to Nova Scotia was Joan Perrie. She was attending a ukulele ceilidh in Liverpool on the south shore of N.S. She enjoyed meeting other ukulele enthusiasts from all across Canada. England and Boulder. Colorado. It was a three-day party filled with learning, music, jam sessions and fun. that Joan describes as fabulous. She had a great time with Doris McKinley (Leona Armstrong’s sister) and stayed with her at Truro. White driving from Liverpool to Truro, they drove through Lunenberg, where they could see the Blue Nose in dock and surrounded by scaffold. The town of Mahon Bay was celebrating scarecrow weekend and the whole town was wonderfully decorated with scarecrows everywhere. The weather was rather dreary with rain all the time, so Joan reports no great pictures. She thoroughly enjoyed seafood chowder time and time again and recommends to everyone to enjoy the tastes of the east coast. The Walton Women’s Institute met at the home of Ruth Axtmann. There were eight members present to enjoy the presentation by Neil and Marie McGavin on agriculture in Africa. A donation will be made to the Brussels Legion Poppy Fund. Lunch was served by Ruth Axtmann and Marion God kin. We welcome new folks to Marie Coutts’s former home. Brad, Crystal and son Gavin Ditner have- moved in. They are formerly of Clinton. Away to celebrate Anne Ryan’s birthday on Monday were the birthday girl, Mary Humphries, Audrey Hackwell, Marie Coutts and Marilyn McDonald. They enjoyed lunch at Anna Mae’s. Unfortunately, Wilma the Hurricane put the damper on travel plans for Chris and Judy Lee. Their trip to Cancun, Mexico was cancelled due to the bad weather. The farmers are hard at it and the fields of corn are being cleaned off quite rapidly with the good weather. Next week is deer hunting so the hunters will also be happy with the open spaces. Everyone be aware of deer near roads and have a safe week. Celebrating birthdays last week were Harry Gillis, Ron McCallum. Bryan Kelso. Janis McCallum. Brett Lee. Lois McCall. Tanner Leslie. Teresa Baan. Dan Taylor. Erma Williamson, and Murray I )cnnis. Congrats to all. Stars study letters at WLS The Walton Little School classes have been learning a variety of things during the month of October. The Acorn class has been focusing on bugs, creepy crawlers, monsters. pumpkins and Halloween. They have made paper bag pumpkins, Halloween collages and pumpkin stamps. They have learned number and word recognition and are looking forward to celebrating Halloween. The Stars picked a new letter to study each week in October. They have focused on “a”, “b”. “c” and soon “d”. They have also learned sign language for each of their letters. They have been busy making apple stamps, beautiful butterflies, colourful collages and paint dabbing. They have been busy learning the sounds of letters, how to print and words that begin with each letter. The children are excited about the new Stars in their class. The Butterfly class spent the first weeks of October discovering signs of fall and celebrating Halloween. Activities have included corn cob painting, leaf collages, singing about pumpkins and dressing up in costumes. While putting costumes on and off, the children have learned many valuable self-help skills such as zipping zippers and buttoning buttons. They can’t wait until Oct. 31.
