Ibday ol Huron's Rural Women and
Poverty project funded by Status of
Women Canada The launch ol the
handbook will kick off Women
today of Hurons annual World
Rural Women's Day Open House
from 12-4 p.m. The theme of this
year's World Rural Women's Day is
"What rights for women as rural
citizens."
World Rural Women's Day lakes
place around the world each year on
the Oct. 15. It was launched at the
fourth UN Conference on Women in
Beijing, China, in 1995 by non
government organizations. World
Rural Women’s Day aims to remind
society of how much we owe rural
women and to give value and credit
to their work.
"Often experiences rural women
have living in poverty leave them
feeling as if they have no rights, so
the two events tied nicely together,”
said Pam Hanington, executive
director Women Today of Huron.
The number of rural women living in
poverty has doubled since 1970.
“How We Count! is a handbook
for women and for community
members who want to change the
way we think about rural poverty.
Together we can create a better
future for women, families and rural
communities,” said Colleen Purdon,
the handbook's author.
How We Count! A Handbook for
Rural Women and Rural
Communities on Poverty is the
second part of a project Women
Today of Huron completed in 2002,
which documented the experiences
of rural women living in poverty and
the challenges that they faced being
both rural and poor.
As with previous research about
rural women in poverty, this project
also uses the experiences of rural
women in poverty living in the four
counties of Huron, Perth, Grey and
Bruce. This project acknowledged
that women are the experts on their
own lives and by sharing their
knowledge, stories, experiences and
recommendations at five community
workshops in 2004-2005, they have
made this handbook possible.
How We Count! answers key
questions such as: How do women
count in our rural community? Do
women still count when they are
poor? Why are so many women poor
and what can communities and
women do about this? What do
women need to survive a plunge into
poverty? How can rural
communities change their attitudes
towards poor women and their
children?
The handbook is organized in four
sections: information about the big
picture of women's poverty as a
global and regional issue and a look
at why so many women are poor;
information about practical supports
and help available for women and
families in Huron, Perth, Grey and
Bruce Counties; information about
how women can move forward to
address poverty in their lives; and
how women and communities can
work together to address poverty and
make change in women’s lives and
in community attitudes.
Everyone is invited to attend the
open house at the Women Today of
Huron Resource Centre on 45 West
St., Goderich.
