The Huron/Perth Community
Legal Clinic, a non-profit
corporation, will be holding its third
annual general meeting at 6 p.m. on
Sept. 26 at 59 Lome Av. E. (Clinic
Office).
Now in its fourth year ol
operation, one of the primary goals
of the clinic remains to involve more
people, as volunteer members and/or
directors of the corporation, in its
mission to achieve a just society
with universal access to legal
services.
The clinic specializes in areas of
law which have a significant impact
on low-income clients such as:

Garden on Sunday afternoon. Next to him is the sign
bearing donors’ names. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Landlord & Tenant (representing
tenants); Ontario Works and Ontario
Disability Support Program appeals;
Criminal Injuries Compensation and
Small Claims Court. Clients who
meet the Clinic's financial criteria
and reside in either Huron or Perth
County are represented without fee.
The current staff members are
executive director. Murray P. Austin;
staff lawyers Jamie Hildebrand and
Kim Birmingham, community legal
worker, Lynne Harris and office
manager, Diana Wilker. All of the
staff will be attending the AGM to
meet members.
The Stratford and Goderich offices
are fully accessible to people with
disabilities. The Goderich office is
located at 44 North St., Goderich,
where space is shared with the
Huron County Legal Aid Ontario
office.
In just over three years of
operations, the clinic has served
many residents of Huron and Perth
County through public information
sessions; summary advice to clients;
referrals to more appropriate
agencies, and tenant duty counsel
work at the Ontario Rental Housing
Tribunal. In some situations clients
have been provided with full
representation at various kinds of
hearings.
One of the greatest challenges
faced by the clinic is the providing
of services over a large geographic
area with a relatively sparse
population (compared to larger
cities).
Solving the problem of access to
legal services when clients have
little or no transportation remains
top priority, and one in which
members of the Huron/Perth
community at large have much to
contribute.
The current board of directors for
the clinic are: Amy Heer (co-chair),
Dawn Kershaw-Halligan (co-chair).
Bill Schutz (treasurer). Judith
Cocker (secretary), Quinn Ross,
Arlene Timmins, David Reid and
Spencer Prinn.
New members are most welcome.
If any resident of Huron or Perth
Counties is interested in joining the
clinic as a voting member, including
possible board membership, contact
Austin toll free at 1-866-867-1027
for more information - if at possible
in advance of the meeting.
