After a year away, John Siertsema
of Trickle Creek Acres of Bayfield is
returning with his miniature animals
and tropical birds to the Thresher
Reunion.
A life-long animal owner,
Siertsema first began collecting
tropical birds many years ago. Today
a room in his barn is home to a great
variety that includes cockateels,
parakeets, diamond dogs, pigeons,
budgies and finches.
He also has some bantams and
coll ducks.
An interest in miniature horses,
however, started him on another
collection several years ago.
Roaming his seven-and-a-half acres
property one can delight in seeing
pint-sized horses, donkeys and
goats, as well as katahdin sheep.
These are a fairly hardy sheep that
actually have hair rather than
wool.
“They shed, you don’t need to
shear them and they are easy
lambing.”
Trickle Creek Acres’ unique
livestock has made it a popular
stop for visitors, particularly,
says Siertsema, for people who
want to bring their grandchild
ren. Anyone is welcome to
visit, but he said it’s best to call
first.
People will have the opportunity
to visit his collection in a tent at the
Thresher Reunion grounds during
the three-day event.
Siertsema’s association with the
Reunion began through working on
the heavy horse display with another
Bayfield resident Tom Penhale.“He
mentioned whether I’d been
interested in bringing the animals to
the show.” This will be the third year
they have attended.
