Reunion 2005 Clinton couple enjoys collection of Chryslers Nice ride Visitors to this year’s Reunion will be able to see this 1962 Chrysler 300, owned by Barry and Betty Young, at the car show. Chrysler is the featured car at the 2005 event. (Bonnie Gropp photo) By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor It will be a treat for Mopar fans this year at the annual Thresher Reunion as they feature Chryslers at the car show. Mopar is the symbol for Chrysler products. You can buy Mopar batteries, alternators, etc. And among those proudly displaying their Mopar classic will be Barry and Betty Young of Clinton. Young’s interest in Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth has been virtually life-long. “Dad always Sawmill drove them. And with the exception of a Ford that I didn’t have very long, I’ve never owned anything else.” That passion for Mopar hasn’t been exclusive to the family car either. The Youngs’ collection includes five antique autos. The 1977 Chrysler is completely original and never winter driven. His 1957 Regent, that was purchased by Young’s father and restored has been to previous Reunions. The 1947 Dodge pickup that he was in the process of restoring has been put on hold since work began on a 1932 Dodge. But the one that will be shown at this year’s event is the 1962 300 convertible. “I wanted a ‘62 for quite awhile. It was the nicest car Chrysler had as far as I’m concerned. In 1962 I sure couldn’t buy it,” says Young, adding with a smile, that if he had bought one then it wouldn’t have cost him what it did today. Having seen the car advertised in an Auto Trader that he picked up enroute to Toronto in 1989, Young contacted the owner in Saskatechewan and purchased it over the telephone sight unseen. The owner, who had a daughter attending school in Toronto, drove it out. The car had about 62,000 miles on it. According to the owner, the car had been sold in Edmonton when it was new, but for some reason had sat in a compound for 20 years before he got it. “He had 14 ‘62 Chryslers,” said Young. “He owned this one for about three years before selling it to me.” The body, said Young, was in good shape, and is now just starting to show some effects of age in the paint. He did some work on the mechanics and bought new tires. The Youngs’ car was part of an article in a May issue of Old Autos, by Rheal Larose. “Finished in white An old gem The arrival of this 1932 Dodge put the restoration of a 1947 Dodge pickup on hold for Mopar fans Barry and Betty Young of Clinton. The couple’s collection of all things Chrysler is comprised of five ciassic automooiles. (Bonnie Gropp photo) with red interior, this is a very striking car with the top up or down,” said Larose. “... this big luxury cruiser is made to go with the best of them. This is what I call a Chrysler.” Cars at the Thresher Reunion have to be at least 30 years old. The Youngs have been showing for over 10, though they have been attending for 40 years. “I love the visiting and reminiscing, the music,” says Betty. “There are people we haven’t seen since last year. It’s the word — reunion.” assembled each year Members of the Thresher Association have gathered for more than 20 years to re-assemble and refurbish a sawmill. For reasons of conservation and safety the mill is dismantled and put in storage following each show. Spectators will get to see what the mill was like 50 - 100 years ago as demonstrations show how the mill was run completely by steam engines, which come from across the province. The 54-inch blade can be powered by steam ranging from 10-75 horsepower. The engine chosen for the job depends on the hardness of the logs to be sawn. With pine, a smaller engine will do, but for woods such as beech, the big machines take over. The whine of the huge blade changes as it bites into the log and the sawdust starts flying. The logs are sawed into rough lumber and are then used for the construction of furniture. There is no waste with a steam powered sawmill because the scrap wood is then used to fire the engine. Other machines in the past, much like the Blyth sawmill, would have been available to come on the farm and turn trees from the bush lot into lumber for the home. However, the Blyth sawmill is too large to do much travelling. The sawmill will be located just east of the people movers headquarters.
