PEOPLE AROUND
AUBURN

Michelle McDowell,
granddaughter of Gerald and Carol
McDowell of Auburn, has finished
her work at Falls Reserve
Conservation Area. She had a
wonderful time with her
grandparents and her grandparents
have said they will miss her very
much.
Before she begins her studies at
the University of Western Ontario,
Michelle is travelling to Vancouver
for a week of holidays and will be
staying with relatives.
Heather Durnin and Mary Ellen
Jefferson are attending Althouse
College in London. This is a teacher
training facility and we wish them
both all the best.
Our youngest, Leah, has headed
back to Guelph and her final year at
university. She is studying
psychology and 1 am very proud of
her.
There are three dates set aside for
baptism at Knox United. Anyone
wishing more details should contact
Rev. Pat Cook.
The Knox official board will meet
on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. in the
church basement.
Sept. 18 Knox and Londesborough
United congregations are joining for
a worship service at Ball’s Church at
10:30 a.m. Refreshments will follow
the church service.
With children heading back to
school and everyone getting back to
business, 1 am sure we will see more
information being passed along on
meetings and events scheduled and
held in the Auburn area. This
weekend has for me always held a
desire to “get organized”, which of
course is nigh on to a year-round
itch.
I have set this weekend aside as
my last chance to procrastinate on
finishing my next book. A collection
of short stories, poems, essays and
other bits with no official ranking to
be titled. North of The
Checkerboard. There, now it is in
print - I have to do it! Right?
Now I would like to switch gears
for a minute. I have as of late seen an
escalation in both children and
adults riding bikes with no helmets,
walking against the lights and
otherwise responsible adults using
the highways as a racetrack. Overall
taking life as an opportunity for
unnecessary risk.
Twelve years ago this past long
weekend our son was killed in a
motorcycle accident and in many
ways that makes me an unwilling
expert in loss and unnecessary
risks.
Please slow down if you’re
heading out. Don’t drink. Parents,
please make sure your children are
wearing the helmets you have
provided for them.
Now that I have that off my chest,
1 will pour myself another tea, put
my feet up, and remember how
lucky I am.
I hope you all had a good
weekend.FROM AUBURN
Wa<wanosh 4-H begins Consuming Passions
By Ellen Jefferson
On Sunday, Sept. 4 at the
Jeffersons, Wawanosh 4-H started a
new club, Consuming Passions.
In this club the members will learn
to make the right decisions when
shopping and understand the reasons
why they buy.
June Robinson and Cathy Drennan
are the leaders of this club.
The members started the meeting
with the pledge. The election of
officers came next. Tina Drenhan
became president with Maisy
Jefferson as vice-president. Reba
Jefferson volunteered for secretary,
and Ellen Jefferson volunteered to be
press reporter.
Tina Drennan read the roll call,
which was Name Five Things You
Bought Last Month. The members
listed things such as gum and
clothing.
Then the members read over Why
We Buy and learned eight different
reasons why they buy.
The consumer profile was
County council passes
rumble strip policy
without discussion
After dominating previous
meetings of Huron County council,
the county’s rumble strip policy was
passed without discussion at the
Sept. 1 meeting.
The new policy will see rumble
strips installed at all rural stop signs
on county highways.
The policy also states: “Rumble
strips may be installed in other areas
if requested and approved by the
council of the County of Huron.”
This clause - effectively reversed
the previous policy that led to a
controversy at the intersection of
Huron County Rd. 84 and Hwy. 21
at St. Joseph. There the highways
completed by the members by
checking off how they spend their
money.
Cathy Drennan and June Robinson
discussed advertising and where
items are in a store. If the sale items
are at the back you will look at other
merchandise while passing through.
The members played a game
department installed new rumble
strips this spring after county council
had three years ago ordered the
removal of the original rumble
strips, installed in 2002 after
resurfacing of County Rd. 84. Local
residents had reacted in anger when
the new noise-causing strips were
ground into the pavement and
several councillors took up their
case.
At council’s July meeting, after a
lengthy debate, council had sent the
rumble strip policy back to
committee for revision.
This time there wasn’t a word of
discussion.
where one member was pretending
to be an animal and the other was
trying to sell it by making the rest of
the group laugh.
Tina ended the meeting with the 4-
H motto. The next meeting is Sept.
16 at 5:30 p.m. at June Robinson’s.
Beat the temptation.
