as having to go through an audition
process and then having to actually
work every day at it.”
The locale was a job bonus as
well. “The only day off we had was
the day we were in dozumei. A lot of
my friends would take cabs from the
port but I would just walk it because
there was so much to look at, so
many vendors on the streets,” he
said.
The infamous cruise ship diet is
unfortunately different for those
working on the ship. “The food for
the crew was nowhere near as good
as for the guests,” he said. But he did
have guest area privileges.
“Generally it was cafeteria style,” he
said.
Gropp’s one piece of advice to
anyone who is planning an
upcoming cruise: “Don’t go during
hurricane season.”
The cruise ship was hit by two
storms during Gropp’s trip: First
Hurricane Dennis where he assumes
about 90 percent of the passengers
were sick.
“It’s worse the higher up (in the
ship) you go. We played on the
eighth deck. I went up for rehearsal
and I just started sweating right
away. The curtains were closing by
themselves and stuff was falling
down from the ceiling. My boss just
looked at me and said, ‘Yeah you
should go to your room right now.’”
Some friends seemed better able
to handle it and actually videotaped
waves that often splashed onto one
of the decks 60 feet above sea level.
Wednesday, Aug. 24 Gropp was
packed and ready to go home then
Hurricane Katrina had other plans.
The passengers and crew were
forced to stay on board while the
ship circled the area until the storm
calmed down. Gropp arrived back
home safely at just after midnight
Sunday.
Despite the storms he said it was a
great experience and he would love
to do it again.
Sounds like a good job if you can
get it.
