The 78th annual Huron County
Plowing Match hosted by North
Huron reeve Doug Layton was held
last week at the farm of Allen and
Kim Walker.
Participants from all over Huron
County took part in the competition
on Aug. 25 and 26.
Kids ages 10 and up from the 4-H
Sod Busters learned the tricks of the
trade on Thursday, getting behind
the wheel and plowing the fields
with a little guidance from parents
and sponsors.
The crowning of the Princess of
the Furrow also took place
Thursday morning, as six hopefuls,
between the ages of 12 - 15 took the
stage to give speeches, answer
questions and show off their own
plowing skills.
Jory Willets 14, of Wingham took
home the crown.
Lunch was provided for all of
those partaking in the plowing and
Princess competition and was
sponsored by McKillop Mutual in
Seaforth.
The princess contest was
sponsored by MGM Townsend Tire
in Londesborough.
Friday’s events got an early start
with plowing beginning at 9 a.m.
Il was a beautiful day for the
participants to show off their skills.
Whether it was with an antique
tractor, horses or by hand, the
onlookers were surely impressed.
A barbeque dinner was held in the
Belgrave Community Centre.
Friday evening preceding the
announcement of this year’s Queen
ol i he Furrow.
Nine girls competed by plowing,
giving speeches, and taking on an
impromptu talk.
In the end, Jessica Feagan of the
Benmiller area took the title.
Runners-up were Rachel DeBoer
of Blyth and Katie Williamson of
the Walton area.
Jessica also took home the honour
of best plowing.
