Huron OPP seeks people for auxiliary program
The Huron OPP are looking for
eight to IO people who would be
interested in belonging to the
auxiliary program in Huron County
Over the last lew years some
members have retired, others were
hired onto the OPP force or have left
for other commitments of their own.
Working in a highly-structured
environment. Auxiliary Members are
expected to maintain the high
standards of the OPP sometimes
working under very difficult
situations
The Ontario Provincial Police
supports a contingent of dedicated
civilian volunteers through its
auxiliary program, which receives it
mandate from Ontario's Police
Services Act. The Mission Statement
of the auxiliary program is to provide
fully trained volunteer auxiliary
members to perform police duties in
special circumstances, including
emergencies, when there are not
sufficient OPP police officers.
An executive committee
comprised of senior auxiliary
officers, commissioned officers and
representatives from the
Commissioned Officers Association
and the Ontario Provincial Police
Association administers the
provincial auxiliary program.
Members of the auxiliary have no
police authority/power and must rely
on the same arrest provisions
afforded regular citizens.
The Police Services Act does,
however, provide for instances when
the auxiliary member may have the
authority of a police officer. This can
occur , in an emergency situation
where the OPP requires additional
strength to cope with a special
occasion or event
Being a volunteei with the OPP
auxiliary allow. citizens (he
opportunity of experiencing
firsthand both the excitement and
challenges as well as the routine and
the uneventful in any tour of police
duty
Auxiliary members, as part of then
duties, may assist regulai OPP
Officers with the following
• Community policing initiatives
and projects
• Search and rescue situations
• Crimes and disaster scenes
• Large gatherings or parades for
crowd ands traffic control
• Traffic collisions
• First Aid and CPR
• Patrol with regular members
Minimum Qualifications required
for becoming an auxiliary member
• Be at least 18 years ot age
• Be a Canadian citizen or
permanent resident of Canada with
a Valid driver’s licence
• Have completed the Ontario
Secondary School Diploma
Program or equivalent
• Have completed CPR and First
Aid Certificate (Level C)
• Be a good moral character, and
mentally and physically able to
perform the duties of the Auxiliary
Program
• Pass a General Aptitude Test and
psychological assessment
• Successfully complete the
interview process
The OPP strives to enrich its
auxiliary program by recruiting
candidates from various
backgrounds in order to provide the
communities it serves with a wide
range of skills so to be a volunteer in
the program you must
• Be able to commit the time and
effort required of the program that
is a minimum IO hours per month
on patrol with a regular force
officer and six hours in-service
training
• Work with the community and the
OPP in identifying and resolving
problems
• Perform many duties outdoors,
often in unfavourable weather
conditions
Surveys, seatbelt clinics, assisting
on RIDL programs, bicycle
inspections anil rodeos, assisting a!
safety days and presentations, loot
and road patrols, tagging evidence,
ceremonial duties, search and rescue
and marine and snow vehicle patrols
are some ol the things you may have
to do.
The uniform tor an auxiliary
member is different than a regular
officer. The regular officer wears all
dark-coloured clothing while an
auxiliary member wears a light blue
shirt and all outerwear bears insignia
identifying themselves as auxiliary.
This is an unpaid position but
some compensation may be received
for travel and meals.
However these benefits do apply
for the position
• An auxiliary member is provided
with an opportunity to work with the
community in ensuring the pursuit ot
legal activities in a safe environment
• An auxiliary member develops a
better understanding of the police
function, and an esprit-de-corps with
regular and fellow members.
• The OPP provides uniform and
equipment for all phases ol the
auxiliary program
