With no small showing of
frustration. North Huron councillors
decided not to proceed with
application for Intake 2 of the
COMRIF grant to complete work on
Boland Street in Wingham.
At the Monday night meeting,
council was told that with its
application for Intake l work on
Catherine Street, the township had
onl> scored 35 points out of 100.
Councillor James Campbell had
been told that the township needed to
"up" its safety information in the
application. However, director of
public works Ralph Campbell said
basically that extensive data must be
submitted to prove that the road is
unsafe. This includes such
information as police reports and
requires a good deal of time.
"The road is built to the engineer’s
plan so it's pretty hard to hammer it,”
said R. Campbell. The problem, he
explained, is that the materials did
not stand up
Councillor Archie MacGowan said
he teels the grant application is set up
lor municipalities to fail. “It's set up
so no one can qualify. It's done on
purpose."
The engineer’s work for the
Catherine Street application
amounted to $2,500. One for Boland
Street could be double, according to
R ('ampbell. "I think it's better to
spend the money where we get some
results."
MacGowan agreed. “It's great, the
big announcement in the press about
the grant. But three-quarters of the
people don't realize it's set up so we
can't qualify"
Councillor Arnold Taylor said,
"When government throws out a Tittle
hit ol bait. I think from now on it's
important we don't let it mess up our
goals "
"It's time to stop betting on the
eas\ money." said MacGowan.
( ouncil passed a motion
rescinding its previous motion that
the township apply for the grant.
