The Citizen, 2005-08-25, Page 9Jim Jim 1 Brown Class Packing up for Yorkton At first I wasn’t going to write this good bye column. After all. I've only been here eight months. But. last week was my last week at The Citizen. I am busy packing this week as I make the move to Yorkton, Saskatchewan, to begin work at the Yorkton This Week newspaper, beginning on Sept. 1. Yorkton is a city with a population of around 16,000. As it is the central city of the region, it has a drawing area of around 125.000. It’s a lot bigger than Wingham and definitely much bigger than Blyth But. I am looking forward to the challenges of working full-time for a large community weekly. The Yorkton Terriers, a Junior A Tier II hockey team, will be the main attraction during the winter months. There is also AAA hockey in Yorkton. However, with two high schools - - one public and one Catholic - I am looking forward to covering something I haven't covered in almost 20 years, high school football. In the summer there will probably be lots of rodeos to cover. But, I understand the town has a baseball team and of course there will be the usual summer sports such as minor ball, lacrosse and soccer. There may even be some sports I have never covered before. 1 have been in midwestern Ontario for almost 13 years - most of that time was at the newspaper up the highway from Blyth. During my eight months at The Citizen I have been able to meet a number of people involved in sports and recreation in Blyth. Brussels and surrounding communities. I hope the Brussels Crusaders return for another season of WOAA Senior hockey. The team has a good nucleus of players, there is only one way the team can go in the standings, and that is up. Maybe they can challenge for the Senior A championship in another year or two. It has been fun covering the Brussels Tigers of the Huron County Fastball League. It was great for them to hold their tournament again. It was just unfortunate that the rains came and ruined the final day of the competition. Going back to hockey again, 1 hope more players from the Blyth and Brussels areas tryout and make the Wingham Ironmen Junior C hockey team. I will miss covering the regional Silver Stick tournaments played in Wingham each year. They are well run tourneys with hard-working executive members. I wish all the local minor hockey teams success in the upcoming season. Although students from Blyth and Brussels areas can attend a number of high schools. I am partial to the Madill Mustangs and hope they have excellent seasons and that their success is led by the effort of students from Blyth and/or Brussels. Wishing everyone good luck in the coming seasons. This is Jim Brown signing off. Thanks. It’s been a slice. Angels raise funds The Londesborough Angels arc once again hosting their annual charity fundraiser. The co-cd baseball tournament this year will be held Sept. 9 and 10. In the past, the event has been a success, with the weekend of fun and games raising money for a variety of worthwhile causes such as Sunshine Dreams for Kids. This year's charity is Easter Seals. Non-competitive teams pay only $120 plus one new ball to enter For information contact Wilma Ellis at 482-3738 or Adrian Salverda at 482-9113. Season comes to an end for Mites Saturday. Aug. 13 Blyth C Mites went to Seaforth to participate in their year-end tournament. They had a great start to the day winning against Winthrop 11-7. The second game was not such a victory with a loss to Seaforth 23-19. Spirits were high when they went on the field for the third game, however. Blyth won 20-16 making them the A champs. Coaches were Jerrod Button and Tim Walden. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 2005. PAGE 9 Su-wing It was not a great day weather-wise but golf enthusiasts had some fun anyway on Saturday as the Brussels Crusaders hockey team hosted its second annual golf tournament at Smith’s golf course outside Cranbrook.
