moves o ffice to Guelph
As of Aug. I, the Ecological
Farmers Association of Ontario
(EFAO) has a new office and new
staff.
The office has moved from the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority building in Wroxeter to
the Ignatius Centre just north of
Guelph. The new membership
services co-ordinator, Karen
Maitland, also started to work for
EFAO on Aug. I.
St. Marys-area farmer and
president of EFAO, Ann Slater said,
“Our board is very excited about
these changes and the potential to
better support our members and
contribute to the growth of
ecological and organic farming in
Ontario. We hope the more central
office and full time staff will enable
us to better promote the practice of
ecological farming in Ontario to
enhance the health of our soil, water,
air, crops, livestock and the people
of Ontario.”
Maitland is quite familiar with
organic farming in Ontario, having
.worked as a research assistant with
Dr. Ann Clark at the University of
Guelph for many years. During that
time she collected soil samples from
and surveyed numerous organic
(arms across the province.
In addition, EFAO has hired Pat

The Ecological Farmers
Association of Ontario recently
received a five-year $246,900 grant
from the Ontario Trillium
Foundation. This funding security
provided the opportunity for EFAO
to support a membership services
co-ordinator and to move the office
to a more central location.

“The education program will
benefit greatly from this new
exhibit.” comments Tammy
Ballantyne, the education co
ordinator at Country Heritage Park.
“It leaches children the
fundamentals of how honey is made,
plants are pollinated and how bees
communicate. They can also
overcome any fear they might have
towards bees and discover that they
are pretty harmless and very
beneficial insects.’
This exhibit will also be featured
in the Bees, Garlic and Herbs event
being held on Aug. 13 and 14 at the
Park. This event will include many
other attractions such as honey and
garlic vendors, herb information,
and a vintage honey equipment
display, and as always, the park’s
other exhibit buildings will be open.
Also farm animals will be on display
and tractor-drawn wagon rides
around the Park will be available.
