Booster seat law in effect, Sept. 1 Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death and injury among children and youth. Don Shropshall said. "We know child car seats and booster seats save lives. In fact they can reduce the risk of death or injury by as much as 75 per cent. That’s why having kids properly secured is no longer an option. Il's the law.” Effective September 1, the Highway Traffic Act will: • Require all drivers, including grandparents and babysitters, to use child car seats or booster seats when transporting children • Require booster seats for small children who have outgrown child car seats but are still too small to be fully protected by seatbelts alone • Assign two demerit points, a $90 fine plus a $20 victim fine surcharge for failing to use booster or child seats, or for using them incorrectly. Booster seats raise a child so the seatbelt will fit properly over his or her body, avoiding soft fleshly areas such as the neck and abdomen, and crossing over the hip bones and chest bones which offer more protection. Placing the shoulder belt behind your child’s back or under the arm is not only an unsafe practice but it is also a chargeable offence. In a crash, these children are likely to jackknife forward over the lap belt causing serious injury even death. The law for the booster seat states: • Must be used for children who weigh between 18 kg and 36 kg (40-80 lbs.) • Are less than 145 cm (57 inches or 4'9") tall • Are less than eight years of age If the child does not meet one of these standards, are more than the required weight or above the height or nine years of age or older they do not have to use a booster seat by law. “This law is just minimal requirements but to keep our kids safe, we can do even more like check sitting height. Is the child at least 4'9" tall? Does the child sit back against the vehicle seat? Do the child’s knees bend comfortably over the seat edge? Is the shoulder belt centred on the child’s chest? Does the lap belt sit on the child’s thighs? If there’s any no answer, the child needs to use a booster to travel safely in the vehicle." Some people do have exemptions for this law. They are taxis, public vehicles, buses, emergency vehicles, vehicles on short-term lease and those from other jurisdictions will be exempt from the new child car seat regulations. Booster seats cost between $30 and $160. A higher price does not guarantee a safer booster seat. Caregivers should ensure they understand how to use the seat and that it includes a Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards label. Josee Cayer, a member of the Huron County Health Unit, the leading specialist in the area, will be having a booster-fitting event at Wal-Mart in Goderich on Sept. 8 from 6-8 p.m. to answer questions about booster and car scats.
