Former tailgunner
Don Tofflemire, a resident of Huronlea in Brussels, was a
tailgunner during World War II, first on the Halifax and then
on the Lancaster bomber. A Lancaster made a stop in
Goderich on the weekend. Tofflemire’s son, Jay, and his
family took the elder Tofflemire to see the Lancaster in
Goderich on Sunday. It brought back many memories. The
elder Tofflemire made 31 flights over Germany, including
two over Berlin. He said being a tailgunner was very
exciting. When he went to see the aircraft on Sunday, he
said the only thing missing was being shot at. (Jim Brown photo)
OPVG, OFPA offer
$2,000 bursaries
The Ontario Processing Vegetable
Growers (OPVG) and the Ontario
Food Processors Association
(OFPA) are continuing with a
bursary fund to support and
encourage individuals pursuing a
career in any aspect of the
processing vegetable industry.
These organizations are working
together to ensure that there are new
individuals who will have
the interest, skills and abilities
to further develop and grow this
sector of Ontario’s agri-food
economy.
Through generous sponsor
donations they were successful in
raising just over $12,000 at this
year’s auction. An additional amount
in excess of $4,000 was donated in
memory of Jim Whitson, former
chairman of the conference
committee for the past three
years and vice-chairman of the
OPVG.
The committee unanimously
agreed to designate an annual $2,000
scholarship for Ridgetown College
in memory of Whitson. This allows
the OPVG and the OFPA to offer up
to eight $2,000 bursaries to students
this fall.
Applicants must be registered as a
lull-time student at an Ontario
college or university entering the
second, third or fourth year of
study.
If you require further information
regarding the bursaries, contact:
John Mumford, Ontario Processing
Vegetable Growers, 519-681-1875
or Janisse Routledge, Ontario Food
Processors Association, 519-767-
5594.
The Bursary Application Form is
available on the OPVG website (or
on request from either the OPVG or
OFPA offices). Applications are to
be submitted no later than Sept. 30
and will be received by regular mail
at 435 Consortium Court, London,
ON N6E 2S8, by e-mail ta
opvg@opvg.org or fax 519-685-
5719.
Money Tips
(NC) - If you’re older, your
children have grown and you
have already built up substantial
equity in your home, you may
want to free up capital by
downsizing. Moving into a
smaller, less expensive home will
provide additional cash for
investment or retirement living
expenses.

Now, 1 didn’t have the heart to tell
Duane that as sports go. fishing is
not the fast-paced reckless sport
where one would find typical

So if you're finding fishing is a bit

Wayne and I attended a lovely
garden wedding as Wayne's niece
Tanya Bauer joined Frank Huber in
matrimony. The wedding took place
at a private home south of Brussels.
Tanya is daughter of Terry and Ann
(Leishman) Bauer of the
Whitechurch area. Guests enjoyed a
delicious meal and beautiful music,
however it was the bride who was a
feast for the eyes and I am sure
Tanya and Frank will make much
beautiful music for a very long time.
Wayne and 1 have our
granddaughter, Myrah with us for a
week’s holiday. She is two and a
half, and the stresses of play-dates
and sand-boxes are wearing her
down. The whole “bunny eat, bunny
world" (a borrowed expression) can
get overwhelming - 1 guess. Or
perhaps I'm kidding a bit.
The parents are in need of a well-
deserved rest. Parenting, when done
right, is the most demanding and
important job on the market. Offer a
hard-working parent an afternoon
off or a day away. Get yourself into
a sandbox somewhere and have a
blast! I know I will.
