Sports Blyth Pre-Mite As win two elose games The Blyth Pre-Mite A team played against Winthrop on Aug. I. This very close game ended in a 12-11 victory for Blyth. In the first inning Winthrop scored four runs. Blyth came hack scoring seven Joshua Kuperus and Drew Bromley slammed homeruns. Drew Van Wyk hit a great triple. Winthrop came back with two runs in the second inning. The third inning Winthrop scored five runs in the bottom of the inning. Kuperus got a triple and Samantha Kerr and Van Wyk both got doubles. The final game of the regular season was played on Aug. 2 between Blyth Pre-Mite A and Stanley. This was another close game. Blyth won 13-12. The Pre­ Mites finished the season in first place with only one loss all year. The team consists of Drew Bromley, Joshua Kuperus, Amy Boyce, Brandon Marshall, Drew Van Wyk, Ryan Plunkett, Samantha Kerr, T.l Pavao, Cory Ducharme, Franklin Marshall, Amy Badley, Kathryn Chalmers, Kaitlin Bos. and Brianna Kuperus. (jim Brown photo) Safe The Wingham Senior A Hockey Club is returning for another year of completion in the Western Ontario Athletic Association Senior A Hockey League. The team, known since its inception seven years ago as the Stainton Spitfires, will now be called the Steelback Bulls in recognition of their affiliation with Steelback Breweries. The coaching staff will consist of Corey McKee, Brian Skinn, Glen Gallaher and Trevor Seip. McKee played his minor hockey in Belgrave and Wingham prior to playing Junior in Brussels and Listowel. OHA Senior in Exeter and WOAA Senior for Brussels, Lucknow and Wingham. Skinn has a long history of coaching and managing in Wingham both in minor hockey and with the Wingham Ironmen. Gallaher moved from assistant coach to assume the coaching duties last season and he returns to the coaching staff for another year. Seip will continue in his position as trainer as well as assume some of the coaching responsibilities. John Stewart is returning for a second year as general manager. Stewart stated, “The team executive and coaching staff are all committed to putting a winning product on the ice this year. We believe that we have a good nucleus of players from last year’s team and with the recruiting we have done over the summer, we feel confident that we are going to make an impact in the league. We are not looking at this being a rebuilding year. We believe this year’s team will be able to compete with everyone else in the league.” The team’s training camp will open on Monday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. In a game between Brussels II and Belmore, a Belmore runner was safe at second base although there are two Brussels II players around the base. Brussels II met Brussels I in the A championship of the tournament.
