North Huron agrees to $15,000 loan for ESTC North Huron council was updated on the Emergency Services Training Centre (ESTC) by Jeff Howson and David Sparling at its Aug. 2 meeting. Council was informed that the Figure shows more full-time nurses Ontario Fire College would be holding two modules at the ESTC. One of the requirements was the installation of a flammable liquids pit at an estimated cost of $40,000. Council was told the ESTC has $25,000 to put towards the project. The additional funds have been committed over the next three years. Council was asked to consider a loan to the ESTC in the amount of $15,000, which would be paid back to the municipality over the next three years. On a motion by councillor Murray Nesbitt, council agreed in principle to a loan of $15,000 to the ESTC, subject to an agreement to be executed between both parties. at HPHA hospitals The latest figures released from the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance highlight a significant increase in the percentage of full-time nurses working at Alliance hospitals. “Since the Government of Ontario began setting targets for full-time nurses in hospitals, the Alliance has been working hard to increase full- time employment opportunities.” stated vice-president of workplace health. Marie Ormerod. Currently, full-time nurses hold 56 per cent of the nursing hours across the Alliance hospitals. This is an eight per cent increase when compared to 2002/03. the year set by the government for comparison purposes. The most marked change has been at the St. Marys site, where full-time hours have moved to 54 per cent in 2005/06 from 23 per cent in 2002/03. “With the Canadian Healthcare System standing to lose a significant number of nurses over the next three years due to retirement, offering employment opportunities that appeal to recent graduates will become more and more important,” says Ormerod. “Increasing full-time oppor tunities is one such measure.” Recent Government of Ontario efforts aimed at mitigating the looming crisis are appreciated by the Alliance. “It will certainly be our intent to work closely with the Government of Ontario to ensure innovative and sustainable strategies are put in place across Alliance hospitals to not only attract new nurses, but to also retain the wonderful staff we currently employ,” concluded Ormerod.
