Getting ready for the Match
Several of the participants in the 2005 Queen of the Furrow competition and the new Princess
competition, including reigning Queen of the Furrow Rosie Grobbink (second from right, front
row) gathered at McGavin’s Farm Equipment recently in preparation for the big event on Aug.
26. The 78th annual Huron County Plowing Match will be held at the Walker farm in East
Wawanosh. The Princess competition is on Junior Day and 4-H Achievement Day, Aug. 25.
Here, the group poses on a rollover plow. New to the plowing competition, this type of plow
has become quite popular in Europe where land is at a premium, and there isn’t space to turn
around a conventional plow, (Advance Times photo)

Busy month
at Walton
Little School
The Walton Little School has had a
busy month in July. The Acorn class
learned all about water. They did
water experiments, played water
games, created “under the sea” crafts
and learned about sea creatures. A
favourite book was Somev here in
the Ocean by Jennifer Ward and T.J.
Marsh.
The Star class enjoyed the books
Stella, Star of the Sea and the
Sandcastle Contest.
They also learned about water and
creatures in the water and about what
fun they can have at the beach. They
made wonderful creations from
seashells, sandpaper and paint. They
practised many times: “She sells
seashells by the seashore.”
The Butterfly class enjoyed a
month of water fun. They did bubble
painting, bike wash, parachute play
and lots of water games. Their
favourite books were Mitch the Fish
and Duck on a Bike by David
Shannon.
All classes have enjoyed
swimming at the Brussels pool,
playing outside soccer and baseball
and golfball painting. They also sold
lemonade from a roadside stand on
some hot summer days.
