Well hello August. The last
unofficial summer month is up and
running and doing a very fine job of
making for a good summer 2005.
For the vacationing crowd all is
well, just a little rain now and then
but mostly great weather and lots of
warmth. The holiday time for the
At the
Branch
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Branch fish fry crew was on
duty for Seaforth Branch for the
Coming Home to the Country
celebration on the long weekend,
they served up fish and french fries
for the largest crowd ever of over
450.
Doing a great job were Glenn
Bridge, Andy Overholt, Mike
Dauphin, Greg Wilson, Sharon
Montgomery, Allyson Cardiff, Jason
and LeeAnn Konarski, Neil, Rick,
Scott and Jo-Ann McDonald. The
prep crew of Julie Harrison, Lloyd
Glanville, John Harrison and Sandra
Josling did a great job getting
everything ready to go.
Euchre results from last week saw
12 tables at play. Top players were
Hilda Holmes and Florence
Broughton with 85 points. The
second-place team was roy and
Shirley Gilders with 75 points and
Kay and Vera Hesselwood earned 73
points and third place. The not-so-
lucky players were Alice Keffer and
Gail Smith winning only 48 points,
but the low prize. Lone hand prizes
went to Dorothy Dalton and Charlie
Cameron.
The Brussels Legion catering crew
was pleased to serve the wedding
dinner for Donna Pattison and Jason
Young at the BMG Community
Centre.
The Branch is looking for a person
or persons to help out once a month
at euchre or Sunday night dances.
Call Jo-Ann at 887-6570.
The major fundraiser for the fall is
the elimination draw set for Sept. 24.
The early bird drav is Sept. 10 and
tickets are available from Branch
members. Please pick up a book of
tickets from the Branch. They are
also at Brussels Variety and
Murray’s Barbershop.
Our thoughts go out to Margo
Richardson who is hospitalized in
London. Best wishes on her recovery
from surgery and our best to husband
Bob and family.
We hope Ross Knight is feeling
better after being released from
kids continues as they enjoy free
time just being kids. The pool
remains a popular spot as the sun
shines on and the temperature stays
high, perfect weather for just being.
The summer visitors are out and
about in the village, checking on
family and friends in the relaxed
atmosphere of the outdoors. There’s
leisure time to chat, admire the
surroundings, enjoy eating in the
yard and generally enjoying the
company.
The Lions youth exchange visits
have been part of the summer fun for
many years in this area. Good
memories of visits to another land
have been enjoyed by many folks
when they were younger. Good
stories of the young people hosted in
our communities remain happy
thoughts for many of the Lions and
their friends.
The International Youth Exchange
continues and Fran Bremner and
Nora Stephenson helped brother
Charlie Shaw fete the visitors for
this year. At Kingsbridge on Lake
Huron Lions District 9A enjoyed the
youth visitors from Spain, Turkey,
Germany, Indonesia, Northern
Ireland, Belgium. Austria, Peru,
Switzerland, Croatia, India and
Brazil. A fish fry, lots of information
exchange, laughter, songs, and dance
made for a very pleasant time
making the world seem a little
smaller and less intimidating.
Thanks to the Lions Club for its
continued support of this very
worthwhile project that has far-
reaching effects on the future
attitude of the youth of our world.
A yearly ritual continued as the
Armstrong gang used holiday time
to celebrate air planes. The
legendary meet at Oshkosh was once
again well worth the drive as
thousands of like-minded folks
learned, compared and thoroughly
enjoyed the vehicles of the sky. The
big red/black bus once again made
the trip without much complaint to
Jim and the boys.
Don’t forget to check out the
music by the lake. Different venues
on .different nights are part of
summer in Goderich and
Kincardine. It’s very nice.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
nospital. Our best wishes to him.

J-walking
A group of athletes with a cause used the Wescast co-ed ball tournament in Wingham on the
weekend (Aug. 6) to raise $1,052 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Five of the team’s
10 power walkers, and two young fans, pose with Moose McKenzie of Wescast Industries Inc.,
the first one in the dunk tank. The team of local women is participating in the Toronto-
Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon Sept. 25 and each must raise $1,000. They’re doing it for
Jackie Wilkinson and Jerry Debruyn, the former an employee of Wescast Industries Inc., and
the latter with strong connections to the industry. Shown are J-walkers Debbie Hamilton of
Teeswater, Alecia Lantz of Neustadt, Veronica Stevenson of Brussels, Becky Lantz of
Neustadt, and Bonnie Brooks of Wingham. Stevenson said if she raised her $1,000 by Aug.
6, she’d shave her head. She did, thanks to her employer, Spinrite’s donation, support from
Glassier Physiotherapy which actually put her over the $1,000 mark, and numerous other
friends and supporters. (Advance Times photo)
