Danielle Bean’s mixed soccer
team the U-I3s, finished a
successful year. They reached the
semifinals and had a lot of fun
throughout the season.
Tony Bean, also in soccer in the
U-I5s finished the season also
reaching the semifinals.
Skills have been sharpened and
new friendships have been forged. A
great season by any accounts.
Mike Bean, and the other
Goderich Sailors Junior C hockey
team held a fundraiser with London
radio station BX 93 video dance.
The family-oriented evening played
country music all night. With 833
attending, the event, held in
Goderich was most successful.
Auburn Lions attended a fish fry
Thursday evening at Grant
Chisholm's retreat at Kingsbridge.
Other clubs were in attendance as
well. It was a chance to meet the
youths and their host families who
were part of the youth exchange for
District A9. There were 21
participating from several countries:
Peru, Brazil, Germany, Australia,
Northern Ireland, Sweden, Spain,
Italy.
Following the fish fry the
exchange youth put on a short
program for the Lions and their
guests. This year’s entertainment
included ethnic dancing which was
outstanding.
While at youth camp they
travelled to Toronto, Niagara Falls
and Sauble Beach as well as to
many local areas. They stayed with
host families giving each member of
the exchange more opportunities to
experience Canadian culture.
Ten community-minded dedicated
Lions served up breakfast for 36
exchange students July 17 at Bill
and Susanne Robinson’s new sugar
camp. President Greg Park said the
group was thrilled with this
opportunity to serve these great
young people.
A successful bridal shower was
held for Ruth Anne Bakker in the
basement of the church. Neighbours
and friends joined in giving her best
wishes along with some useful
gadgets.
Since the groom, Michael, is a
fisherman who participates in
fishing derbies and is very interested
in catch and release competitions
and programs, and since they met
while playing volleyball - that was
the theme of the shower. The fishing
- volleyball theme was heavy on the
fishing as Ruth Anne had to fish for
advice in a pond and wear a fishing
hat with worms for atmosphere.
This winning combination was the
brain-child of Bernice Gross.
A reading was given by Ruth
Armstrong on an application
Michael had to fill out for his
potential father in law and Karen
Webster read the address before the
gifts were brought to the front.
Ruth Anne thanked everyone. A
lunch of muffins, cheese and jam
was served. The colour theme was
purple and white balloons, flowers,
tablecloths and a grape drink fit into
the colour scheme very nicely.
Ernie Durnin is set to leave
hospital this week. Ernie will be
leaving a toe behind, but he is felt to
be better off without it. With that
surgery behind him Ernie has gained
a lot of strength back and son Ron
reports him to be doing, “amazingly
well”. Keep on the fast track Ernie.
Lillian Logtenberg is also in
hospital and we wish her a speedy
recovery.
The Auburn community was
saddened to see John and Tina
DeVries moving to a community
near Brantford. Their friends and
neighbour will miss them.
Lois Haines, who has moved to
Fordwich. will be missed by her
many friends. Lois and her two cats
have moved to be closer to her
daughter, Margaret, and son-in-law
Ron Livermore.
Jim and Grace Cartwright
returned from a camping trip out
east and north. The couple left on
July 8 with a visit to Grace’s sister
Evelyn Robichaud in New
Brunswick. A week later they joined
up with Hebo and Margaret
Siertsema and they climbed Sugar
Loaf Mountain that is 1.000 feet
high.
They saw Hope Well Rock in N.B.
This is where the tides go out for six
hours so they were able to walk the
ocean Boor. They also camped at
Plaster Rock in New Brunswick just
60 miles from Riley Brook where
they were witness to a 10-year
tradition of 1,000 canoes filled with
fiddlers playing their music. There
were even several canoes lashed
together so they could accommodate
an entire band. It was a colourful
and musical experience.
The Siertsemas continued on to
tour Cape Breton Island and Jim and
Grace joined them on Prince
Edward Island where they toured
the highlights.
The weather was rainy while
visiting Evelyn, then it turned very
hot at the end of June.
Following the eastern trip Jim and
Grace spent 10 days camping at Port
Loring.
A hearty congratulations to Ian
Andrews and Bev Brame on their
engagement. Ian is the son of Sandy
and Shirley Andrews.
Nancy and Greg Park have a
house guest for the time being. Max
is a tall handsome, well trained
young male with a soft shoulder and
a cold nose. Max seems to fit right
in and with little effort everyone,
including family pet. Mulligan, may
lake a real shine to Max.
Additions to the Dungannon
schedule for the long weekend are
airbrushing tattoos on Saturday and
a dunk-tank, (always fun)
throughout the three-day event.
There are still a few Aubur.i hooks
left. Anyone interested can give
Susanne Renon a call at 526-1116.
There will be a reunion held on
Aug. 20 giving those who graduated
from SS#5 Hullett a chance for a
good visit with old school chums.
This is to be held at the Auburn
Community Centre and promises to
be one of those can’t miss events.
Take along your address book and
pencil as you will want to keep in
touch with these “new” old
friends.

Despite the rain on Sunday morning, moto-cross racing was held as scheduled at Auburn Hills.

South Huron Sheep
Club meets at leader’s
By Robert Henderson
The fourth meeting for the South
Huron 4-H Sheep Club was on July
11 at 7:30 p.m. at the leader,
Florence Pullen’s house.
To start the meeting members
played a half-hour game of soccer
and said the 4-H pledge. They then
jumped into a conversation about
sheep diseases, what symptoms they
show, preventive medication, and
how to treat the disease.
After discussing information on
Go For The Gold, they split into two
groups. One group judged eggs and
the other had to judge wheat. When
finished judging their category they
switched.
They ended the meeting with
president Jessie Leeming saying the
4-H motto.
