Having just lost Herb two weeks prior, it was unexpected so soon to lose Mildred as well. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Brian and Gail and their families. The funeral was held on Thursday with many Walton people in attendance. It was during the past weekend that the Repowered Diesel Confab group held their 25th anniversary reunion at the farm of Ken and Betty Glanville. Guests were hosted Wednesday through Monday from Ohio, North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania and all over Ontario. There were nearly 30 motorhomes camping at the farm. On display or driven to the farm were 26 different engine-driven vehicles that are repowered diesel. Among the interesting vehicles was a motorcycle that was converted to run on a mixture of diesel fuel and vegetable oil and got 100 miles to the gallon. There was a Diamond T Truck and a motorhome driven by a converted combine engine. There was also a 46 Chev cab-over engine repowered to diesel. The group is comprised of many age groups that have innovative ideas and have been interested in new ways and learning from the older members. They have been striving to make more economical vehicles long before the automakers began doing the same. The weekend included three seminars put on by Ron Stroden on fuel emissions and diesel testing, Bill Saunders on the history of the diesel club and Dan Renovitch on axle and transmission combinations. During the weekend the 4-H Sodbusters Club cooked up hamburgers and hot dogs for a fundraiser with all the supplies given by the Glanvilles. Carl Merner catered the supper. On the Saturday, it was the day of the big rains and the only thing missing was a repowered diesel boat, said Ken. Keith and Gloria Wilbee have returned from a trip to Branson, Missouri and Manitoba. While in Branson they saw an Elvis impersonator who put on an “incredible” show. They also saw the Legend Show, cruised on the Branson Belle and enjoyed show tunes performances of Phantom of the Opera and Chicago. They toured through the Dakotas to Bossionvain, Manitoba to visit with Roy and Eunice Wilbee, IanAViJbee's brother, and cousin Richard Wilbee and family. They enjoyed a day out at a threshermen’s event where there were, lots of antique machinery including some unusual models. It was very hot while away and just 20 minutes from Bossionvain, the town of Delarain was under water due to the excessive rains. Crops are not planted and the soggy ground is a mosquito heaven. They travelled home via the States and Gloria reports great trip. Congratulations to new parents John and Marci McCall MacBain. Their new daughter Alivia McCall MacBain finally arrived on July 23 in Geneva, Switzerland. Grandma Sherry McCall was there for the event and grandpa Murray reports all is well. A bit of a sad start to Sunday morning. Judy Lee and I were off bright and early to motocross at Aubum Hills when we found our poor little Walton fox dead on the road. At least, probably, the Walton fox. The fox travelled back and forth by our farm many days and nights and was a familiar sight at dusk on the side of the road. Though not liked by all, the little fox was certainly a topic of conversation by many. Celebrating birthdays last week were Karin McDonald Calhoun, Michael Warwick, Jim Blake, Ken Rogerson, Bob Williamson, Andrea Taylor, Bradley Fraser, Laura Godkin, Charles Gulutzen, Sharon M. Brown, Tina Driscoll, Dorothy Kelly and Tyler Eckert. Happy birthday to all. The Walton Community Hall facelift has begun with the removal of the old siding by a group of volunteers. The hall was the recipient of an Ontario Trillium grant to upgrade the heating, siding, windows and some of the electrical work. The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry of Culture, annually receives $100 million of government funding generated through Ontario’s charity casino initiative. The volunteers were called Wednesday and what a response. Ken Shortreed arrived with the bucket truck to help with the high spots and McGavins sent three men and a lift. Stephen Gulutzen, Brandon McGavin and John Glanville along with Chris and Judy Lee and Matt Shannon of Tite Racing, Matt Shortreed and Julie Moffat, Jim Campbell, Rick McDonald with tractor and trailer, Jo- Ann McDonald and David Pethick accomplished the removal of the complete south and west sides, the high peaks of the north and east and the complete clean up of the grounds by 1 p.m. The evening crew arrived at 7 p.m. that night and after two hours Jason Konarski, Devon and Chris Blake, Don Nolan, Jeff McGavin, Judy Lee, David Perrie and Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald had everything off and cleaned up around the hall. It was a close game with Walton losing 16-15. Pitching for the Indians were Jason Denys and Robbie McClure. Scott McDonald had the silo homerun of the evening. The Walton ladies slo-pitch team played against the Brussels Bookies on Thursday evening. It was a good game with the Wonders losing 14-7. The Walton Brewers had no league games last week. The next home game is August 9 against Exeter. The Brewers played in the Brussels fastball tournament on the weekend. They lost 'o the Brussels Tigers on Friday evening 4-3. They then played against Wroxeter Rippers on Saturday afternoon and lost 6-1. Their third game would have been Sunday but the tournament was cancelled due to weather. The Walton Masters also played in the tournament. Their first game was against the Brussels Masters on Friday evening. Doug Sykes took the 1-0 loss. In game two, Walton Masters played against the Clinton Masters. They batted very well arid came out the winners by a score of 6-1. The third game of the round robin was against the Mitchell Masters and Walton took the tough 2-1 loss. The runs for and against sent the Walton Master to the A final against the Brussels Masters. It was a great game with the teams tied after five innings. Brussels scored the go- ahead run to win the game. Playing on the Walton Master Brewers teams were Brad Knight, Steve Knight, Bruce Pearn, Jeff McGavin, Brian McGavin, Dave Fisher, Doug Sykes, Jim McDonald. Rick McDonald, Rick Knight, Murray Houston, Scott Robinson, Steve Rathwell, and Brian Neill, a lot of retired players whom I’m sure will have some new aches and pains this week.
