Blyth competes in I -11 tourney B champs Archie’s Animals claimed the B championship of the Blyth co-ed slo-pitch tournament held this past weekend as a fund raiser for the Kamikaze Woo-Woos. (Jim Brown photo) Blyth U-l 3 team just misses playoffs Lucknow hosted the year-end U- 13 soccer tournament July 19-23. Blyth Flames played Lucknow IV in the first game of the tournament on July 20 at 8 p.m. The Flames’ game captains were Aislinn Bremner and Jamie Pollard. Blyth goalkeeper Jacob VanDorp made a fantastic effort to stop Lucknow from scoring during the game. During the first half of the game, VanDorp reached back to sweep the ball out of the net. However, the referee said the ball went over the goal line, so Lucknow was ahead with a score of 1-0 at half time. Blyth had the opportunity to tie up the game after Lucknow had a hand ball in the crease. Brendon Boven took the penalty kick and shot the ball up into the top left corner for a goal. The game ended in a tie, so each team was awarded one point. On Wednesday, July 21 the Flames met Clinton Madrids at 8 p.m. Blyth’s game captains were Larissa Jenkins and Jordon Rinn. Kurtis Kolkman passed the ball up to Rinn, who passed the ball to Brent Drost for a nice chip into the corner of Clinton’s net. Clinton was first to score after the half-time break. Both teams played hard to break the tie. In the last 10 minutes Jacob Nonkes kicked the ball up to Drost who passed to Rinn, to score. It was a 2-0 victory for Blyth. YanDorp played well in net. This win earned the Flames three points. On Friday, July 22, Blyth met Wingham II at 8 p.m. Game captains were Laura Peach and Kolkman. Wingham played very .aggressively and scored four goals during the first half, then scored three more goals in the second half for a solid victory. The Flames were scheduled to play the Goderich Legal Eagles on Saturday, July 23 at 11 a.m. Goderich did not have enough players, so they forfeited the game, giving Blyth three points. This gave the Flames seven points and second place in their pool. Only the first- place team went on to the semifinals, so the Flames’ soccer season was over. The Flames players were: defence, Aislinn Bremner, Kelly MacDonald, Chantel Warwick, Ross MacDonald, Jason Warwick and Jason Young; halfbacks, Larissa Jenkins, Alex Raynard, Katie Packer, Brendon Boven, Jacob Nonkes, and Jamie Pollard; forwards, Ermly Nicholson, Laura Peach, Brent Drost, Kurtis Kolkman, Jordon Rinn and Tanner Merner; goalkeeper: Jacob V; nDorp. The Flames were coached by Eric Sturzenegger and Mary Ann Drost. Both coaches say they are proud how much each player improved and worked as a team over the soccer season. Clinton hosted the U-l 1 coed soccer tournament July 18-23. Blyth Lightning's first game was held at the Christian School field on July 18 at 6 p.m. The opponents were Wingham Remax. Lightning's game captains were Jan Paul VanDorp and Lucas Frawley. Blyth was first on the scoreboard when Zachary Drost and Derek deBoer assisted J.P. VanDorps' successful shot on Wingham's net. Wyatt Bearss scored a goal for Blyth after successfully stopping and controlling the ball after a Wingham goal kick. Murray Dale gave a long hard kick to Bearss for another goal for Blyth. making the score at half­ time 3-0 for Blyth. Blyth kept the momentum going and Lightning’s Jeanette Schramm scored the first goal after half-time, on an assist from Bearss. Nick Brandon advanced the ball towards Wingham’s net and received an assist on Bearss’ third goal of the game. Dale advanced the ball towards the Wingham net, but a Wingham player took possession of the ball. Brandon got the ball away, however, to score the final goal of the game. The score was 6-0 for the Lightning. Leendert VanDorp played a great game in net for Blyth earning a shutout. Anne Beth VanDorp coached the Lightning team to the win. On Wednesday, July 20, Blyth Lightning played the Clinton Arsonal 0-11 soccer team at Central Huron Secondary School. J.P. VanDorp and Drost were the game captains. VanDorp played in the net for Blyth during the first half. Clinton played a strong game and scored two goals during the first half. Blyth was unable to get around Clinton’s defence, so the score was 2-0 at half-time. Brandon was Blyth’s goalie for the second half of the game. L. VanDorp passed the ball up the field to Blyth Pre-Mites down Benmiller The Blyth Pre-Mite As played another five-star game on July 19 this time against Benmiller. The game ended in a win 19-12 victory for Blyth. Cory Ducharme played for Benmiller who was short players. In the first inning Benmiller had a good inning with six runs. Brianna Kuperus started Blyth with a triple and Joshua Kuperus followed with a Blyth Squirts On July 15 the team played Zurich in Zurich. This game ended in an 8-8 tie. On July 19 they battled Stanley in Stanley. It was a great game with a score of 19-2 going to Blyth. Great pitching from Adam Cronin, Kirby Cook, Cody Ducharme and Conner Prescott. In the fourth inning Ducharme and Adam Cronin stroked homers. The highlight of the game was Tyler Black. He began with a super catch at third base and a “frozen rope to first’ to get the base runner that didn’t tag up, for a nice double play. LAWN QUESTIONS? Dale was able to stop Clinton from scoring a goal by stopping the ball with his face. What a team player. Clinton was able to score twp goals during the second half making the final score a 4-2 victory for Clinton. Helena and Joost VanDorp were the coaches for this game. The final game of the tournament for Blyth Lightning was against Goderich MacDonalds at 7:15 p.m. on July 21. Blyth’s game captains were Peach- and Bearss. Goderich was the only team to score during the first half after successfully kicking the ball in the net on an indirect penalty shot. L. VanDorp played hard as Blyth’s keeper. During the second half of the game Goderich played a strong game and scored three goals. Peach was able to pass the ball to Derek deBoer for Blyth’s only goal of the game. The final score was 4-1 for Goderich. Coach Anne Beth VanDorp had her own U-l8 soccer tournament game to play, so Lightning was coached by Glenda deBoer and Tim Frawley for this game. The Lightning team had a great season of soccer. They worked hard as a team and had some fun, while learning some new soccer skills. Lightning’s awesome players are: defence, Brooke Bouman, Averly Kikkert, Jolande Oudshoorn, Lucas Frawley, Zachary Drost; halfbacks, Jeanette Schramm, Michele Studhalter. Courtney Monk, Murray Dale, Marc Dery, Jan Paul VanDorp; forwards, Sadie Chalmers, Marijke Oudshoorn, Kathryn Peach, Wyatt Bearss, Nick Brandon, Derek deBoer; goalkeeper, Leendert VanDorp. The team was looking forward to their year-end team party on July 27 at coach Anne Beth VanDorp’s family farm. homerun, his ninth of the season. The inning ended with five runs. J. Kuperus got a triple and Amy Badley got a homerun, ninth of the season as well. A double went to Ryan Plunkett and the inning ended with Blyth scoring nine runs. in the third inning Benmiller scored two runs. Joshua and Amy Boyce came back with doubles and Blyth scored five runs. Brandon Marshall made a great scoop of the ball and made an out at first base. It was a great game played by both teams. MATT ANDERSON graduated on June 15, 2005 from Conestoga College’s Woodworking Technology (Co-operative Education) Program. Matt is currently employed at Woodecor Ltd in Stratford as a cabinet maker.
