Rain shortens tourney
Rain, rain go away. Come again another day.
That childhood rhyme is what the organizers of the 34th Brussels Tigers
men's fastball tournament must have been thinking on Sunday.
With the Masters division champion having been decided Saturday
evening, four games were remaining to the played in the round robin portion
of the tourney on Sunday morning.
The first game, a match between the Goderich Orioles and the Atwood
Avengers was played, with the Orioles squeezing out a 3-2 win.
Then it began to rain harder, and with thunder and lightning games were
not played. When the rains did stop, the tournament was three hours behind
schedule. However, they did not have the umpires to use a second diamond.
Tournament organizers decided to cancel the tourney, with the remaining
teams getting $200 back on their registration fee.
Brussels scored a 3-2 decision over Walton, in six innings, to claim the
Masters title on Saturday.
Brian Ten Pas had a double anj single for Brussels. Ron Strome connected
for a homerun. Todd Uhrig had a double and Ken Higgins rapped out a
single. Rick McDonald had a pair of singles for Walton. Brian Neil had a
double. Rapping out singles were Steve Knight, Brad Knight and Rick
Knight.
Results of the round robin for t ie Masters division were: Brussels 1,
Walton 0; Clinton 5, New Hamburg/Mi I verton 3; Walton 7, Clinton 1;
Brussels 8, New Hamburg/Milverton 7; Brussels 6, Clinton 2; Walton 2, New
Hamburg/Milverton 1. Clinton won the B side of the Masters division, with
a 3-1 decision over New Hamburg/Milverton.
Results of the recreational teams’ play were: Walton Brewers 3, Brussels
Tigers 4; Belmore Junior Stingers 3, Atwood Avengers 0; Walton Brewers 1,
Wroxeter Rippers 6; Elmira Cubs 8. Atwood Avengers 1; Goderich Orioles
7. Belmore Junior Stingers 5; Brussels Tigers 1, Fullarton As 6; Goderich
Orioles 4, Elmira Cubs 7, Fullarton As 7, Wroxeter Rippers 2 and Goderich
Orioles 3. Atwood Avengers 2.
Blyth plays to bronze

Lucknow won the gold medal of the U-18 girls soccer championship,
played in Blyth last week.
Blyth settled for the bronze, with a 4-1 decision over Wingham in the
bronze-medal game played last Friday at the Sparling fields.
Competition began July 18 with two games being played. St. Columban
scored a 2-1 decision over Clinton and Lucknow defeated Goderich 4-0.
In the two games played July 19, Wingham edged past Blyth 1-0 and
Lucknow blanked Clinton 1-0.
Wingham scored a 3-2 overtime decision over St. Columban on July 20
and Blyth scored a 3-1 decision over Goderich. Scoring the goals for Blyth
were Jory Uyl, Kalie Alcorn and Kristie Butt.
In the semi-final games played last Thursday, St. Columban defeated
Wingham 3-1 and Lucknow got past Blyth 2-1. Alcorn was the lone goal
getter for Blyth.
Butt scored two goals to lead Blyth to its 4-1 decision over Wingham in the
bronze-medal contest. Adding single goals were Uyl and Alcorn.
In the gold-medal game, Lucknow and St. Columban were even at one
after regulation. Neither team was able to score in the overtime periods.
Lucknow won 2-1 in the shoot-out to earn the gold medal. St. Columban
earned the silver.
Blyth Mite As play to 7-7 draw
Blyth’s Mite As played against Holmesville on Monday, July 18. The game
ended in a 7-7 tie. Holmesville was short three players so Mackenzie Nesbitt,
Hunter Dale and Cory Ducharme played for their team.
In the first inning Holmesville did not let any runs in. The second was a
strong inning for Blyth with players scoring six runs. In the third inning
Blyth added one more.
There was great pitching from Gabrielle Ducharme, Ryan Nesbitt and
Keyonia Johnston.
Masters champs
Brussels scored a 3-2 decision over Walton Masters to win the Masters division of the Brussels
