Ambulances will be testing
hydrogen fuel injection system
If the $7,000 cost can be found
from savings within the budget.
Huron County’s ambulance service
will test a hydrogen fuel injection
system on two ambulances this
|year.
David Lew, manager, land
ambulance services, explained at the
July 7 meeting of Huron County
council that the conversion to the
diesel-powered motors injects
hydrogen into the manifold.
Hydrogen burns 14 times faster than
diesel fuel and nine times faster than
gasoline which means the engine
produces less soot and particulate
cutting pollution by 75 per cent
reduction.
The hydrogen, which is created
from distilled water, also reduces
fuel consumption. Hamilton, which
has tested the system and has now
installed it in the fleet of 35-40
ambulances, expects to save
$63,000 a year in fuel costs.
The added benefit is the reduction
of wear on engines. Lew said. If the
county can get an extra year’s use
from each engine there will be a
substantial saving.
