In hours it amounts to more than
70. In making a difference in the lives
of senior citizens the amount of time
is immeasurable.
Grade 8 students from Blyth Public
School (BPS) were recently
recognized by Town and Country
Support Services for their assistance
with the weekly Blyth and Area
Dining for Seniors program.
Throughout this past school year
students have assisted adult
volunteers and staff in preparing,
serving and cleaning up at the
monthly diners’ program.
Hosted by Town and Country
Support Services, the Dining for
Seniors program offers local residents
an opportunity to enjoy a hot,
nutritious noon hour meal, to share in
conversation with friends and
neighbours and to enjoy musical
entertainment or a. guest speaker
following the meal. Some 35 local
senior citizens regularly attend the
dining program which is available to
those aged 55 and older.
Thirteen Grade 8 students from
BPS took part in the volunteer
program helping in the kitchen in
food preparation, setting tables and
cleaning up after the meal. "They
help prepare all the meals from roast
heel to quiche," notes Dianne Weber,
community service co-ordinator for
Town and Country. "The students are
always eager to help with whatever
duties arc assigned them. They learn
the proper table setting procedure,
safe food handling, how to follow
orders from the kitchen staff and the
co-ordinator, and how to interact with
seniors. They always bring their
smiling faces to brighten up the day."
Held on the first Friday of the
month at the Anglican Church in
Blyth, the noon hour meal event
begins early in the day lor the
students who arrive shortly after 9
a.m. to help in the kitchen preparing
the food. After cooking, setting

Chief building official Paul
Josling reported at the June 28
meeting of Huron East council that a
cellphone tower is to be erected in
the Brussels area.
A company has a preliminary site
plan and hope to erect a tower as
soon as they receive approval from
Industry Canada.
According to Josling, because this
is a federal jurisdiction, the
company doesn’t have to apply for a
building permit.
However he noted, the company
did decide to apply for approval
from Industry Canada. Another
option for the company was to hold
a series of public meetings.
The chief building official
reported more building permits have
been issued this year in comparison
to last year and the value of those
additional permits is more than $2
million.
Josling reported that 17 permits

The students enjoy spending time
with seniors at the Blyth dining
program. Student Danaka Bailey
notes, “The seniors are so nice and
they appreciate what you do.”
“It's good experience and teaches
us how to communicate with others,”
