(Vicky Bremner photo) Hullett class visits Wonderland • The last few days of the school year are difficult for both the teachers and the pupils to complete. The teachers are hard pressed to keep the attention of children who are already looking forward to free days in the sun and family activities. Everyone at Hullett Central Public School engaged in some special events to combine learning of a different sort and fun. On Monday, primary pupils attended the opening of the new playground equipment at the ball diamond giving them all the opportunity to test the new setup as well. That day the Grade 8 pupils took their year-end class trip. Two graduating girls, Kyle Middegaai and Krista Rozendal, filed the following report of the day. “On June 27. the Grade 8s headed to Toronto to visit Canada’s Wonderland. Upon arrival, we went on a ride that would get us all warmed up for the day. A few minutes later, and we were ready to go on some fun and serious rides. Some of us even had the courage to ride the more intense rides while some were satisfied to sit on the sidelines and watch. There were classmates who just wanted to try out more and more rides. for for the The day was very hot but we all seemed to find some water to cool down in. Overall our day was great and we all enjoyed being together. We stopped at Kesley’s Family Restaurant for supper. Our meals were great and we had fun time. Thanks to Mr. Drennan planning this great class trip us.” On Tuesday morning, with help of parents and senior pupils, the kindergarten classes held a play day on the area in front of the school. Evy is the manager for Huron County Children’s Services and spends her days overseeing a variety of programs designed to ensure preschoolers get the best start in life. Evy and her family emigrated to Canada from England and have lived some 30 years in Goderich. She was a part of the daycare system in Goderich until 2002. Prior to 2001. the government dealt individually with daycares for their funding and for the subsidies for families using daycare. In 2002 the government switched their procedures and decided to contract these services through the county. Ready for a change also. Evy accepted this challenging position. Since that time Children’s Services has instituted 53 various programs in the county. Evy gave some details about a few of those services. •Huron County began a program of licensed home child care sites having accepted 18 such centres to date. There is now an inclusive network of teachers to support children needing help through the special needs resources, in addition. Children's Services offer a number of parenting information and support programs. The staff assists young families who need subsidized childcare, for they recognize many families are stressed and stretched to the limit. The government introduced the Early Years Program in 2002 a free session for preschoolers. The first centre for this program was in Clinton, but Children’s Services recognized the need for satellite centres. The first such satellite centre was at the Londesborough United Church and it continues to be an active centre. Parents bring their children and stay to interact with them in this most successful free program. There are now 33 satellites in Huron County held in municipal buildings, libraries, schools and churches. A relatively short business meeting followed. Several upcoming dates of caterings and presbytery events were mentioned.
