backstage magicians have competed
their work (except for the hard

make a huge impression when you
see it on stage” she says, because
later you’ll only hear it in action and
you need to remember what it was
like.
As challenging as the wood
chipper might be. the Festival’s crew
in the past built a threshing machine
for Death of the Hired Man that
many in the audience were sure must
be real so there’s plenty of
experience here. The project will
combine the talents of the various
departments because it has to look
impressive, the materials fed into it
must look like they’re actually being
chopped up by it, and the sound
designer must create the right sound
effects to make it seem authentic.

A challenge for the sound designer
is to make the audience believe the
wood chipper sounds real
(they get their heavy workload later
with The Thirteenth One). The play
calls for people in simple, everyday
clothing and there aren’t a lot of
costume changes.
Bauman, who worked at London’s
Grand Theatre as a costumer and is
heading a department for the first
time, began work May 30 with just
Kerwin's preliminary black and
white sketches of the costumes
needed. Until she got the colour
sketches and the actors arrived (they
were due to start rehearsal a week
later) she wasn't able to make many
final decisions because even though
she often has their measurements,
the actors’ specific colouring
other idiosyncrasies can change
choice.
Bauman’s first step was to
downstairs to the Festival’s bulging
costume storage area to see what
might be in stock. Since it’s a
modern show, what can’t be found in
stock might be bought in second
hand stores or, if necessary, new.
Costumes are seldom made from
scratch unless there’s a period
costume that isn’t in stock or can’t

But clothes aren't just clothes,
Bauman points out. Though there
might be many plaid shirts in stock,
the one that gets chosen has to be
just right. “Everything has to work
together as well as work
set.”
And Bauman's area of
extends beyond clothes
explains Snell. Actors' hair must be
cut or styled to suit the part. When
actors are in more than one show
(actor Adrian Churchill will juggle
rehearsals and performances in both
the opening productions) the hair
must be suitable for each.
