Mr. J. N. Howard,of the old Establish

Wewere shown yesterday a sample
of barley grown on the farm of Mr Wm
Fanson near Thornbury, Co Grey, and
is the best we have ever seen. The
specimen is the two row English barley,
It may be seen at this office.
On Thursday evening last the prem-
ises now occupied by Mr. Mark Clark,
was fired into three times by sonic -un-
known person. No damage was done

Agricultural, Society.
The annual meeting of the Stephen
and Usborne Agricultural Society was
held to -nay in the Town Hall. Owing
to the unfavorable weather the attend
ance was not so large as it would other-
wise have been, The Treasurers state -
merit showed that the society was in a
very prosperous condition. The sum
of $22 remained in the Treasurer's
hands, while the total indebtedness of
the society was $700. .$500 of this
debt liad been contracted the past areal-
in
earin the purchasing of property, $200.
was the provious debt caused by the
shortage occassioned: by the bad weath-
er the day of the fair in 1888. The new
premises purchased last year was re-
paired to the extent of about $150
which was paid from last years profits.
Votes of "thanks were passed to the re-
tiring; Directors Messrs. James Oke,
Samuel Sanders and W. G. Smith. The
following officers and directors. were
elected for the current year —Presid-
E. Christie; Vice -President, Jas, West-
cott; Directors Donald McInnes, James
Delbridge, Wesley Huston, Rd. Davis,
Geo. Bawdenand John 'Willis.

',Grand Concert.
The Chautauqa Orchestra Concert
Company, of Toronto, under the man-
agement of Ur. J. U. Depew, will give
a grand concert in the Opera House, on.
Friday evening; July 24th, consisting'
of Orchestral, Ballad, Humorous, Vocal
and Piano Music, interspersed with
readings and elocution. The orchestra
is composed of twelve professionals,
under the leadership of .Mr. Arthur
Depen, who has been conductor of the
orchestra for the last two seasons atthe
Canadian Chautauga, Niagara-onth'e
Lake. Mr. Herbert L. Clarke, cornet
solist,of the Queens Own Band,Toronto;
2,4r. Fred Smith, enlph0nium soloist of
the Academy of Music, Toronto, . and
Signor F. L. Napolitani, solo violinist,
are among the number. Mrs. Murray
Dickson, soprano soloist, of Dr, Wilds
Chiuxh, Loi auto, w ill sing with orches•
tra accompaniment, and Miss 1lcGilli-
bray, elocutionist, slid Delsairte Gold
Medalist, of Chicago, will delight all
who may have the pleasure of hearing
her, Mr Will F ltn.uisay, Toronto's
refined humorous yocalist, has been
specially engaged for this concert, and
no one should miss hearing Will, ' Nye
look for a rich musical treat and from
the flattering press notices we have
read we are sure we will not be disap-
pointed. Let every one makeup their
minds to attend this concert and give
such a large company the ,Hearty re-
ception and encouragement they need.
We feel sure that the Exeter 'Musical
people will encourage the return of
this company to our town.

choice sweet music. The boys did
their part well, and they cannot be
spoken off in toohigh praise. The
loud bursts of applause throughout the
address of Mr, Wilson, evidenced the
appreciation of tke .large audience
present. The remarks of the Rev..
gentleman were practical, and if carr
ied out by those present, the year that
they had just entered upon would be
a very happy one. Some of the mem-
bers then gave a number of interesting
readings and some good music was
also rendered. The President alien
stated that he wished to answer the
the question that the collectors had niet
with on going their rounds, viz; "What
are you (Poing to do with the Mersey,"
and if the Treasurer of the church
would please come forward, •he would
do so in a practical manner, by placing
in his hands the suns of twenty dollars

Elections.
The contest between the candidates
for the Deputy-Reeveship between Mr.
W. G. Bissett and Mr. T. R. McCallum
was a very vigerous one. Mr. McCal
!tun canvassed, very thoroughly . while
Mr. Bissettremained nearly idle in that
respect. The vote was a great surprise
to all. The election for the Councillors
was very exciting and from the time
the polls opened until they closed, rigs
containing voters eould be seen hurry-
ing around 011 °very street, and every
available vote was polled. •The council
for this year is an entirely- new one.

Mr. D. Birks preached in the lltarr's
Hill Church last Sabbath afternoon. He
delivered a very interesting, eloquent
and impressive sermon. ,
We regret to learn that Mrs. John
Brighton is now lying very ill,and but
very poor hopes are entertained for her
recovery=, at the time of writing:
Mrs. Hetherington, of dhesley, left
here for .her home again, on Wednes-
day moning:last. She had been paying -
her daughter, Mr. Joseph. N. Faulder, a
visit.
We congratulate Mr. Geo, Bloomfield
on his success at the Model School at
Goderich, ; George will now be ready
for school duties after holidays, as he
has been engaged as tether of S. S.
No.l McGillivray.
The S. S. entertainment held in the
Mair's Hills church was a splendid sue
cess. The programme consisted of
music vocal by the choir and others
and instrumental by the Juvenile
Harmonica Band; recitations dialogues
etc. by scholars of the school and read-
ings by others, and an ,address by Mr.
D. Birks. The proceeds amounted to
$24.
